Everywhere you look in today’s society, women are looking at empowering themselves by gaining new skills and honing the ones they already possess. Because of the popularity of online school and education, returning to school has become something attainable for women all over the world like never before. With an abundance of grants and scholarships for women, it is becoming even more affordable for women from every walk of life to continue their education. As Nancy Etz praises higher education, it’s certainly more attainable for everyone than it ever was before.

But why are women returning to college, especially if they have already invested decades into another career? There may be a variety of reasons, but here are just a few of the top ones.

  • It increases their potential to make more money.

Many women are unsatisfied with the amount of money they are making in their current careers. We all know that the income gap between men and women is still not nearly as equal as we would like. Returning to school and getting that additional training may just be the necessary item to give women the edge to earn more money.

  • It’s a chance for them to start a new career.

Along the same lines, many women are unhappy in their current career choice. Maybe they let go of their dreams to take the “safe” or “expected” path, but now that they are older and in a different season of their lives, they are willing to embark on that dream that has been long-neglected. Going back to school may be the very impetus for them attaining their dream job.

  • This is their first time attending post-secondary school.

While it may be difficult to believe, many women did not attend school after they graduated from high school. In fact, depending on their situation, maybe they didn’t even complete high school. Now that they are in a different place in their lives, this may be the perfect time for them to pursue that higher education that they were never in a place to pursue in the past.

  • It is time for them to update their skillset.

This can be a massive one. The workplace has dramatically changed in the last five or ten years. It is possible that even if a woman has earned a Bachelor’s Degree that she may wish to go back and update her skills to keep up with current trends. Perhaps she will not need to take an entire new degree program, but even taking a few courses to acquire twenty-first-century skills can be a smart step in her current career. It will definitely make her more marketable no matter what her future holds.

  • She is ready to go into business for herself.

Maybe some women are tired of answering to a boss, and they are ready to branch out and open their own business. While there is no hard-fast rule when it comes to entrepreneurship, going back to school can give you that edge that ensures a better degree of success as you branch out in this area.
