Blogging Challenge Day #21: “What is your preferred Christmas beverage?”

This is another challenging one for me because I am not the same person I have been for the past forty years or so of my life. In the past, I would have said hot chocolate, eggnog, Christmas punch, apple cider, and a whole host of other sugary Christmas drinks. But those don’t appeal to me the way they used to.

My preferred Christmas beverage is now Chicory. In fact, that is one of my new select drinks in general. If you are not aware of what Chicory is, let me give you some information about it and why it has become my new favorite.

Although I am not addicted to caffeine, as I have transformed my life this year, I sought ways to reduce caffeine consumption. So I began to research alternatives to coffee. (I do love Pumpkin Spice Lattes for sure!)

Chicory belongs to the dandelion family, and the root is used as an alternative to coffee. The health benefits are enormous (aids in digestion and the like), and the flavor is very similar to coffee without all the negatives that might come with caffeine.

As I have been watching Christmas movies this year, I have typically found myself with a cup of hot chicory, a splash of almond milk, and a bit of Stevia or some other mild sugar alternative. Whenever I found myself craving a hot cocoa (because they were drinking that in the movie), I would drink my chicory and never feel like I was depriving myself.

I want to try a healthy version of eggnog that I found made with almond and coconut milk, but that will have to wait until New Year’s. I do plan to have some real eggnog on Christmas Eve, but I never was one for drinking the real thing. I have always preferred a healthier alternative.

I would love to try some kind of hot wine drink one of these days with spices in it, but at this point, I might be the only one who drinks it, and I just don’t like drinking alone! That’s why I haven’t had wine since last December, and who knows when I shall again??

Chickory is very popular in Louisiana.

I drink tea and water most of the time, but I love a hot chocolate once in a while during the holidays. I rarely drink alcohol, but I did buy the Hallmark wines.

Mine is peppermint hot chocolate with a candy cane and either marshmallows or whipped cream. I totally understand the craving while watching Hallmark movies. Every time they mention “hot cocoa” I so want some but so far I’ve only have one. Mmmmmm mmmmmmm gooood!!!!!

My favorite beverage is a herbal gingerbread tea that has chicory in it actually. Since it only comes out for the holidays, I always purchase enough to last through winter. 🙂

The traditional holiday drinks (eggnog, apple cider, hot chocolate) are delicious but I know they’re loaded with sugar.
I’m trying to make better choices. I’m interested in learning about the alternatives you mentioned. I don’t drink alcohol – so it would be fun to have non-alcoholic festive drink suggestions.
I do drink 1 to 2 cups of coffee in the mornings. Chicory?? I’ve never noticed it in the grocery store. Is that where you buy it? Happy Holidays!

Hey Cynthia! I buy Chicory over on Amazon. There are many different varieties. I think I’ll message you with what I buy, but it is wonderful!!
