When I was preparing to graduate from high school, I had to visit my school guidance counselor every week to check on the new potential scholarship opportunities that might have become available. It was often a time-consuming process because I was ineligible for most of the scholarships being offered.

But with the advent of the internet, the entire scholarship playing field has changed. My daughter has two years left in high school, and suddenly, there are more scholarship opportunities than ever before, and most of the time, the application process couldn’t be easier. An extensive selection of opportunities, such as the Dr. Jan McBarron Scholarship, are easy to access online and even simpler to determine eligibility, requirements, and so much more.

The hardest part of scholarships is no longer the finding of ones for which to apply or even the application process. In fact, all of that information is readily available thanks to the world wide web. However, sifting through the information to discover which one may be right for you and your specific situation can be quite a chore. Thankfully, the process of finding the best scholarships for everyone may be easier than you think.

First of all, checking with your high school guidance counselor may still be the best place for you to start. Because he/she has probably been working in education for quite some time, more than likely, he/she knows the best scholarships for which to apply. Moreover, he/she also has your school records close at hand, and one of the things in which counselors specialize is matching students with correct opportunities, whether at high school or beyond. More than likely, this professional will have access to the most up-to-date information on scholarships and more for your unique situation.

Once you have exhausted the resources of your school guidance counselor, then it may be time to contact your prospective college or university. More than likely, you will have already checked into financial aid and the like, but in the event you have not or have overlooked this vital step, now would be the perfect time to ask them about any scholarships that may be offered. Additionally, they may be able to direct you to other resources as you attempt to find more ways to pay for your continuing education.

Another avenue for you to consider is various organizations that offer scholarships. If you have been active in your community while in high school, this is the time to determine if they offer any scholarships that you may not have considered or even heard about. There is a chance that you may not even know about the wide variety of organizations out there that offer scholarships. Be sure to check into any number of religious organizations, chambers of commerce, corporations and more. You may discover some little-known opportunities for which you may be eligible.

While continuing education can sometimes be considered cost-prohibitive, if you invest the time to do appropriate research, you may find that the college of your dreams truly isn’t out of reach after all. Be sure you do not wait until the last-minute because college scholarships are something that favors those who do not procrastinate.
