Everyone suffers from a headache at some point. In most cases, it is simply a reaction to overstimulated nerves, blood vessels, and muscles in the head. In fact, the cause of the most common type of headache, the tension type, is not really known.

But, what is understood is that the pain can be deliberating and prevent you from continuing with normal activities.

That’s why it is important to understand the 5 best ways to get rid of a headache:

  • Physiotherapy

This may seem like an extreme response, but a visit to a physiotherapist can ease the pain that is causing you to have headaches. Perhaps, more importantly, they should be able to assist you with some basic massage principles to help you to deal with the pain of a headache when it arises.

But, you need to choose a reputable physio, such as Wellers Hill Physio, in order to get the best benefit.

  • Resting

Headaches are often the result of overstimulation. This can be in many different forms: excessive exercise, too much sun or even more stress than normal.

Sometimes all you need to do is close your eyes and rest for 10 minutes to an hour. Going into a dark space will also help.

  • Heat

It is possible that you have a headache as the blood vessels in your head have shrunk due to another issue. Placing a warm towel on the back of your neck will warm and dilate your blood vessels. This will encourage blood to flow towards it and then onward into your head.

This should help to ease the pain.

  • Unwind

Stress is one of the biggest problems in the modern age. As lives become more and more hectic, the amount of stress people are feeling is growing.

This can cause headaches and removing the stress can alleviate the headache.

The first step is to get away from the stressful situation. The next is to try some basic meditation techniques; this will help to clear your mind.

All you need to do is sit in a quiet room and focus on your breathing. Breathe in through your mouth for a count of 4 and then hold for a count of 4. Slowly let your breath out through your nose for a count of 7 and then repeat.

By focusing just on your breathing you’ll forget about everything else; it can make your headache simply disappear.

  • Diet

Headaches can be a result of dehydration or even the food you eat. Drinking a glass of water can help to alleviate the pain of the headache and even be enough to get rid of it.

You should also look at the food you eat to see if any particular item triggers your headaches. If it does, then you’ll need to stop eating it!

Of course, it is possible to take over the counter medication to get rid of the pain of a headache. However, if it is possible to treat it naturally, this is always the better option.
