My daughter is definitely a little musician. She is ten years old, and she has a keyboard. Because of the musical knowledge she already has (between a mother who is a former music teacher and a music teacher at school who has invested a lot of time with her), she has done a lot to teach herself how to play her keyboard. I had downloaded programs in the past to teach her, but I have never really liked what I have seen online. There has been nothing outstanding that truly engages her.
I was recently able to try out the online piano lessons at Hoffman Academy. It is an online site that uses videos, pdf files, and MP3’s to teach basic piano skills to children and adults. I was so excited when my daughter came to me and asked for the materials. I gladly printed everything out, and she got busy with her lessons.
The things I like about this system are practically endless. I love the fact that it utilizes multimedia to teach these musical skills. So many people (myself included) are visual learners, and there is nothing like adding video and listening to engaging worksheets. In fact, the worksheets are impressive enough by themselves. They make learning fun and accessible for all. We honestly didn’t use the videos nor the music examples as much as we did the worksheets. Part of this is probably due to the fact that we both have quite a musical background. She had no problem picking up the information in Unit 1, and she was playing music before too long. I was pretty happy with the results.
She didn’t want her picture included in this review–she sometimes doesn’t like to be in my reviews–but this is her keyboard. You can see some papers off on the right hand side, and those are the worksheets I printed out. She really didn’t need a lot of guidance to use this curriculum, and I couldn’t have been happier with this company. Their musicianship and logical progression makes perfect sense, and I would highly recommend it to anyone. With this program, anyone who wants to learn to play the piano can!

This is a really neat concept! I like the fact that kids and adults alike can learn from this. I think music is a great way for people to connect!
