I honestly don’t remember the first time I saw David Lewis in a movie or show. I’m sure it was on the Hallmark network, and no doubt, he was memorable. But as the years have gone by, David continues to be one of those actors who just pops up out of nowhere and you never know where you might see him next. Last Christmas, I noticed him in A Joyous Christmas, and because I had interviewed him previously, I reached out for a follow-up chat. Unfortunately, our schedules have both been so crazy that it is not until now that I finally have the opportunity to highlight this compelling artist again.

RH: Since we last chatted, we saw you in the most recent Murder, She Baked film. Again, I had the dubious honor of interviewing the killer. How do you as an actor get into character for a role that requires you to not let the audience know who you really are in a mystery? You did an exceptional job, and you were kept off the suspect list for the majority of the movie, so how did you accomplish that?

DL: Whenever you’re playing the killer in a movie, your job is to not let the audience know for as long as possible. And the best way to do that is to play the character as normal as possible. Anything sinister or shady in your performance, and the audience will pick up on it immediately. A good director will be aware of that and hopefully guide your performance with that in mind.

Some viewers got to see you in Rogue. What was that experience like, and what did you appreciate most about your role and that show?

Rogue was a great part for me. Playing a military assassin is not a part that is presented to me very often. More often than not, I am behind a desk pushing papers and hiring people to do the dirty work, so this was really exciting for me to play such a dynamic character. He is definitely an alpha male and incredibly confident in what he does. And I thought Rogue had a fantastically gritty street feel to it. One of my favourite parts in the last year.

Hallmark viewers got to see you in a fun role in At Home In Mitford. What was it like working with Andie McDowell? You were also reunited with Cameron Mathison in that film. How did that experience compare with Murder, She Baked? And of course, everyone wants to know what it was like being “married” to Sarah Edmondson. You two seemed to connect well. Why do you think you two got along on screen so well and seemed to have such great chemistry?

At Home In Mitford was lots of fun. Andie was lovely. I’ve been a fan of hers since Four Weddings and a Funeral. And on this show, I got to get to know Cam a lot better. We had more scenes together, which was great. He’s a really great leading man and it turns out we both love golf!!

I’ve known Sarah Edmondson for years! She’s honestly one of my favourite actors in Vancouver. Talented and best of all, really grounded. Always a pleasure to work with, especially when you’re putting in twelve-hour days.

We also saw you A Joyous Christmas this past holiday season. What was it like working on that film, and what did you enjoy about this particular film and role the most?

I love Christmas! I’ve loved it since I was a kid. It means a lot to me…plus getting to work with a good friend Allan Harmon. He’s been around the block a few times and his stories about the industry are great. A fun job.

I realize that your movie The Prodigal Dad seems to be making the festival circuit. What can you tell us about the film and your role in it?

It’s a film that deals with a husband and father that loses his wife in a hiking accident and then tries to come to terms with where he is in his life with career, middle age and connecting with his daughter. It’s kind of a dark comedy. I play his daughter’s college professor who starts out as a friend, but has a darker side that comes out during the film. A true Vancouver indie film. We shot it on the fly with lots of masking tape, sweat, and passion.

How did you get involved with this Morning Show Mysteries series, and what can you tell us about your role? What was it like working with Holly Robinson Peete?  And since there are two filmed with one more on the way, what can you tell us about what we can expect from the next one without giving away anything?

Like most of my roles, I auditioned for this and got the part. I play Lance Tuttle. A self-possessed morning show host that takes himself faaaaaaar too seriously. It’s one of my favourite roles in the world of Hallmark. They’ve really let me play with this part. Taking him to the limit of his ego, but still keeping him likable for the audience. He’s just the best.

I’m a HUGE fan of Holly! She’s so good on set! We get along great! She’s a pleasure to work with. She makes me laugh out loud almost every day we work together. Also, she refuses to age!! What’s the deal with that? The show has obviously grabbed a hold of an audience as we just finished #3 and start #4 in a few weeks. I can’t wait to see where they take the cast next. And by cast, I mean Lance…I’m all about Team Lance!!

I understand you also appear in Unspeakable. What is special about this series? 

Unspeakable is a limited series that will be coming out in January of 2019. It’s produced by the CBC and created by Robert Cooper. It’s the very powerful true story about the 1980’s Red Cross AIDS scandal that happened in Canada. It spans from the 1980’s through to 2014. For those out there that don’t know this story, in the 80’s, the Canadian Red Cross had a large supply of blood that was tainted with HIV that they knowingly gave out to the public. Many people ended up getting infected and dying because of this terrible decision. It laid waste to the hemophiliac community. Families and communities were torn apart. It’s a project I’m incredibly proud of and I think it’s a story that absolutely needs to be told. Please keep an eye out for it.

Any other upcoming works you can mention?

I’m currently working on a remake of the horror film Child’s Play…and unfortunately that’s all I can say about that.

Also, I will be guest-starring on an upcoming episode of The Good Doctor. I believe it is scheduled to air on October 29th which means it is this upcoming Monday!

What is one thing that most people don’t know about you?

I now own a cat. I never wanted to own a cat as I’m not a huge cat lover, but due to a series of events, I now have a nineteen-pound cat living in my house…and it turns out I kind of like him. Maybe even adore him. Also around 10:30 PM every night, his eyes get really big and he attacks my ankles. So I got that going for me.

David is one of those actors who is regularly assigned to a supporting role and/or minor role in whatever project he is cast, and regardless, he is always prominent and unforgettable. His sense of humor might tend to give the initial impression to some that he doesn’t take his craft seriously, but that would be a thoroughly inaccurate assumption. As is the case with most who have impeccable comedic timing and/or the talent for playing calculated psychopaths, David is one who conscientiously gives his all to every role and production with which he has the honor to be involved. I have witnessed a portion of his diverse range as I have followed his career from Hallmark and beyond, and no matter what, he never disappoints. He is an actor who is present, grounded, and consistent while possessing a demeanor that makes him a joy to have on any set.

If you happen to watch the Christmas movies that the Hallmark Channel and Hallmark Movies & Mysteries are currently running until the first of next year (January 2019), more than likely, you may have the honor of watching some of his past works such as A Christmas Detour, A Joyous Christmas, and more.
