You are probably looking for the next charity you can participate in to give back to the community. As good as your intentions may be, you can’t always trust the new charity you came across. Scammers posing as charity champions are increasing by the day. It is very unfortunate as they sabotage the support people who need it should be getting. Therefore, you need to be meticulous when preparing to engage in any charity. Here are the mistakes you should avoid making.
1. Not doing due diligence
You should do ample research to find a charity that aligns with your goals. If your goal is to help eliminate poverty, then do micro-level research into an organization whose mission aligns with that. For example, “this charity helps eliminate poverty.” The piece of information tells you a lot. If you are looking to participate in eliminating poverty, then this might be the place for you. Others may include gender-based charities and so on.
It does not stop there. Research is also supposed to tell you if the charity you are donating to is legitimate.
2. Giving to a door-to-door solicitor
These are usually scammers. A serious charity will want to prove the credibility of its foundation. A marketer will even suggest that you provide credit card information or also collect the cash themselves. Genuine charities have a streamlined way of collecting donations, where you can be guaranteed that your money ends up in the right hands.
3. Donating any item you feel you might not need to a charity
This is why you need to do research. Understand what the vision and mission is of the charity. Some charities even list the items they collect. Making assumptions that any item you donate will be useful is wrong. There is no point in donating clothes where they are not needed. They will go to waste. Be objective when giving your donations.
4. Not having a well-thought-out plan
Plans and strategies make projects successful. If you have decided to join the charity train. You should have a strategy. This should cover the patterns of donations, amount to donate, and so on. A strategy will ensure that you don’t get strained financially, and you help to achieve the goals of the charity.
The few tips above should help you get started with your charity work. The biggest challenge has been fake charities, but with research, it will be easier to identify excellent and effective charities.
