5 Ways To Get Into Acting

So maybe you weren’t a child actress, your parents didn’t take you to commercial auditions and modeling agencies, and you are only now discovering your passion for acting. The good news is that it’s really never too late.

Some of today’s top actors didn’t even get noticed until they were in their forties or even older, like Samuel L. Jackson, who started out in social activism before turning to acting, primarily in small theater roles before getting critical attention as Gator in 1991’s “Jungle Fever” at the age of 43. According to Business Insider, he’s managed to make more money at the box office than any other actor alive today.

If that inspires you, here are five ways to get your acting career started.

Education

If you’re still in school, be sure to take advantage of any drama programs or similar offerings to improve your skills and learn new ones. Consider applying to some of the best acting schools in the country, such as Julliard in New York City or the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco.

If that’s not possible, another option is to take classes through your local community college, city programs or evening adult school. Even professional actors and those who’ve already taken classes in the past can benefit from continuing education. Attending a class is a great way to practice, learn, and network with other actors and actresses, even if you’re already an expert.

Perform, Perform, Perform

Join a local theater for more practice and time on the stage to show off your skills, take on as many auditions as time allows, and perhaps even get a job at an amusement park for more practice and exposure. It’s important that all actors, when just starting out, take every opportunity to perform wherever and whenever they can. Instead of getting a job serving tables, find a job that allows you to get paid for what you love to do and gives you the most opportunities to get noticed.

Sign Up on Special Guest

Special Guest is an app created by Damon Wayans, Jr. and Kris Jones. It’s completely free to sign up as “Talent,” to get paid appearances, get noticed, make more money, and even get help with free marketing.

Hire an Agent

Get prepared by having professional headshots taken, creating a resume that highlights your experience and talents and developing a cover letter. Then, contact the actor’s union and request a list of franchised agents. This can help you to avoid talent scams that can be common in this industry. Reach out to a wide range of talent agencies by mail, including your professional documents, and request an interview. If you get an interview, congratulations! You’re one step closer. Be sure you look professional and are ready to show off your skills.

Patience

Get used to rejection. If this is truly your passion and dream in life, the only way to succeed is by perseverance, consistency and plenty of patience. There will be times throughout your journey that you’ll want to give up, but nothing so rewarding comes without a challenge.
