More to Love by Robin M. Helm
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated in any way and all opinions are 100 percent mine.
First of all, this is a clean romance that is based on Jane Austen’s beloved “Pride and Prejudice.” I know that this is one of those stories that has been remade and rewritten more times than I can count, and sometimes that will turn readers off. But please don’t make that assumption with this book as it would be entirely inaccurate.
Secondly, this is a Christian book. Scripture or quotes of wisdom begin every chapter, and there is no doubt that the principal characters are church-going, God-fearing, Bible-believing folk. Due to the time period in which this story takes place, the Christian faith will appear differently than if it were a contemporary retelling. But regardless, there is no doubt that these people are Christian and they are learning to live out their faith in practical, tangible ways. There is no preaching in this book, but there are enough faith elements to satisfy most lovers of this genre of fiction.
I was pleasantly surprised at this retelling of a story I fell in love with back in high school. i read the original on my own, and I have seen many screen adaptations of this timeless story and read a few reinterpretations of the novel as well. I believe that the love story between Darcy and Lizzie will always capture our imagination and sensibilities. Furthermore, this book keeps the integrity of the story while introducing a few new elements that give it an enticingly fresh perspective.
I don’t want to give away too much, but let me say that the changes that the author chose to make did not feel forced nor silly. I adored the fact that Elizabeth struggles with her weight. I was grateful to see the walls crumbling between Darcy and Lizzie a little earlier than expected. And the mystery element kept me on the edge of my seat. Wickam’s story was most intriguing. It was evident that the author put in some research in order to insert these newer elements with style and grace and most importantly, without interruption of the story’s flow.
I am grateful that I read the first book, and I’m enthralled to know this is a trilogy. I can hardly wait to dive into the next chapter, but I highly recommend everyone start with this foundational book in the series.

More from Robin
Have you ever been judged on the basis of your appearance – what you weigh, how you dress, how you wear your hair or do your makeup? I am a professional dieter, and I have been on all of them. I lose, and I gain it back. I know the lengths a woman will go to after she overhears remarks about how she looks, so I relate to Elizabeth in More to Love in a way that’s a bit beyond my comfort zone.
Another aspect of this book which is personal is that I chose to base a supporting character on a wonderful, Christian lady at my church (with her permission). Mrs. Donna Bailey has been a constant encouragement to me in regards to my writing. She often gives me beautiful sugar cookies she painstakingly decorates with holiday themes. Mrs. Bailey is the housekeeper and dessert cook at Longbourn, and she helps Elizabeth through thick and thin, so to speak.
