Cast: Eliza Coupe, Steve Howey, Bob Stephenson, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Ed Begley Jr, and the late Glenne Headly
Katie and John Kelly (Eliza Coupe and Steve Howey) are ready to settle down and have kids but five years later, all they have to show for their efforts is a mountain of negative pregnancy tests and an increasingly elaborate home micro-brewing rig, which John hopes will launch his company. As they run out of traditional options and their window closing, the couple explores the daunting world of medical, spiritual, and homeopathic methods to conceive a child. With an ensemble cast that also includes Bob Stephenson, Elizabeth Rodriguez, Ed Begley Jr., Jon Daly, and the late Glenne Headly, MAKING BABIES puts a couple through the ringer of modern infertility treatments and questions whether their marriage will withstand the ultimate test.
MY THOUGHTS
First of all, I want to state I adored the overall concept and story of this movie. The acting excellent, the comedy was spot-on, and I couldn’t have been happier with the relatability of the topic. Infertility is a serious issue that plagues many couples in today’s society, and this was handled with humor and tenderness. I even found myself getting emotional as I watched certain moments. While the ending is never in question, it was still a fitting and sweet conclusion.
For those who may be concerned about objectionable content, please be warned. This is not a family-friendly movie; it is an adult movie. I was grateful to see that the couple was married, and there is no gratuitous sex in the film. No one is cheating on anyone, and they even are nominal Catholics.
However, there were several uses of the typical unsavory words, including a couple of misuses of God’s name. I personally could have done without those, but since this is an adult film and those kinds of words are often in the vocabulary of people in today’s society, it was to be expected.
I was grateful to see that there were no actual sex scenes shown. Much was implied and discussed, and several times, we saw the upper bodies of the two were engaging in the acts, but most of that was handled in such a lighthearted way that I didn’t find myself offended. Again, let me state that it is an adult movie that deals with a sensitive topic, so much of what is discussed and implied fits the subject matter.
As far as the acting, I couldn’t have been happier. All of the actors were fantastic. I had never seen Eliza Coupe in anything, but as the female lead, she was perfectly cast. I knew I recognized Steve Howey, and after my research, I realized I had seen him as Van in Reba so many years ago! He was the perfect husband in this film, and these two handled the comedy and the drama together on-screen quite well. I could see the possibilities of a sequel if there was an interest.
While I was unfamiliar with Ed Begley Jr. as far as his name goes, and while I have not seen his recent works, I saw that I knew a lot of his past guest star spots from the 1970s and 1980s. Regardless, he was the ideal fertility doctor, and there are some hilarious scenes due to his amazing comedic timing.
I knew I recognized Glenne Headly, but I had no idea she had passed away! I loved her in Dick Tracy, Mr. Holland’s Opus, and so many more movies/shows throughout her wonderful career! To think this would have been one of her last movies! She was perfectly cast, and as the mother of Eliza Coupe’s character, I couldn’t have been happier! The scenes between her and Eliza were some of the most heartfelt and touching in the movie.
Another comedic standout is Bob Stephenson as Gordon, John’s brother! I was essentially unfamiliar with him and his work only having seen him in one or two appearances over the years, but whenever he was on camera, he nearly stole the show! Thankfully, his character became three-dimensional and not just the pudgy, silly two-dimensional sidekick that sometimes happens in these stories. I was quite pleased with him, and he made the whole “silly dad” thing work.
Adding in the multicultural element is Elizabeth Rodriguez, who is the perfect sister-in-law to Katie, Again, I may have only seen her in one other thing previously, but her strength of character, her handling of the comedic scenes, and even the way that she and Bob interacted on-screen made her believable, sympathetic, and supportive. A true gem of a character!
One of the more intriguing supporting characters was that of Katie’s boss, Danica, as played by Jennifer Lafleur. I had never seen her previously, but Jennifer was the perfect cold, unfeeling, business-only boss–the perfect foil to Katie’s character. I hope to see more of her in the future as she has definitely proven her talent in this role alone.
One notable cameo is that of Jon Daly as Cesar. I know him more by reputation than following his works. He will no doubt be a standout in his small, integral role. Again, very comedic and relatable. But not a very likable character, as you will see.
In short, if you are looking for a modern-day romcom meant for adults, this may be one to consider. I invite you to check out the trailer and the links below. This movie is showing in several cities nationwide, and there’s always that chance that more will be added. It may be the perfect “date night” movie!

While I never had this issue (three daughters and pregnant the first month we tried for each), I have friends and family members who had great difficulty getting pregnant. It’s good for people to see that they aren’t the only ones in this situation.
