Back when I was writing for Starry Mag, I had the marvelous opportunity of interviewing a captivating and prolific actress by the name of Heather Doerksen. Although it’s been well over two years since that time, I have faithfully followed this brilliant artist, and whenever she pops up in a Hallmark movie (or a network show), I enthusiastically cheer for her successes. It just so happens that we are about to see Heather in the third installment of All Of My Heart this weekend on the Hallmark Channel, and recently, Heather took some time from her lively schedule to answer a few questions while informing us of her current and upcoming works!
RH: Since the last time we chatted, you have done some incredible voice work. At this point, what has been some of your most notable and/or most fun voice roles? What do you continue to enjoy about doing voice work?
HD: My favorite roles in animation have been in the Lego Star Wars Droid Tales where I voiced Princess Leia. That set the stage for another Lego character named Skylor in Ninjago. I’ve also had so much fun in Dreamworks’ Dinotrux as Snowblazer and Xee! Doing children’s cartoons reminds me to stay young at heart.
You also got to come back for the sequel to All of My Heart. The fans were ecstatic to see Casey back and potentially finding love. What did you enjoy most about making All of My Heart: Inn Love? Why do you think this series has continued to be so popular amongst the fans?
It was so nice to be invited back. This cast is truly so sweet and makes me laugh all day. It’s also such a treat to watch Lacey {Chabert} act. She’s a genuine talent. I think this series of movies is so well-liked because it not only follows a relationship at the beginning stage, but continues the journey well down the road (and into marriage in the upcoming movie!) and we see the challenges it faces, and how these two people stick it out through those hard times.
You have been a part of the series Take Two on ABC this summer. What do you think has made this show so much fun for the viewers? What should the fans of the show do to ensure that a season two happens? Any special behind-the-scenes moments?
Take Two has been such a ride, because the character I play is a cutthroat businesswoman who wants to see her friend (and client) succeed in the film biz. It’s a fun romp because every episode is a new case to solve, and the chemistry between the two leads really carries the show. Keep tweeting about Take Two if you want to see a season two!
Hallmark viewers are about to see you in the third installment: All of My Heart: The Wedding. What can you tell us about Casey in this film? Why are the viewers going to love this one so much? Any chance more of these in the series might happen? Any special memories from filming?
This is the third time viewers will be seeing Casey in these films. This time around, Casey has created a very successful business for herself at the coffee shop. She’s still a warm ear (and a friendly slap on the wrist) to Jenny. And there may be a special journey for Casey along the way… Viewers will love this one because it’s a wedding! I mean, who doesn’t love a wedding?
There has been talk in the air of more of these coming in the future but nothing solid just yet. A special moment for me with this third installment was the casting of “Meg”. I was with my dear friend Pauline Egan on the beach when the phone call came in that she’d got the role. We danced on the beach together and celebrated being in the same movie together since we have been real-life friends for six years.
What other current/upcoming roles can you tell us about?
I am currently filming a very exciting project that is going to be released in October, and another that I filmed that will be released this winter. Unfortunately, I can’t talk about them just yet, but please keep an eye on my Twitter and Instagram for the latest (and thanks for the support!)
Hallmark viewers have seen you in a handful of movies, but we have yet to see you in a Hallmark Christmas movie. If you had the opportunity to be in one, do you have any special requests you might like to be included (cast, storyline, etc.)?
A Christmas movie would be so fun! I adore the ever-hilarious Cindy Busby from the Unleashing Mr. Darcy series. Andrea Brooks from When Calls the Heart is another friend I’d love to work with. And of course, I would never say no to working with Lacey Chabert again.
Why do you Hallmark’s viewership has continued to increase in the way it has?
Hallmark is always feel-good. Viewers know what to expect when going into a movie marathon. I’ve said it before: doing a Hallmark film is like a big warm hug.
Hallmark has also been doing a lot of location films in recent years. They have filmed in Fiji, South Africa, Belgium, Romania, Mexico, and even on a cruise ship. Where would you like to see Hallmark do a location film next and why?
I’m always happy when Hallmark shoots in Vancouver because it means I can rest my head on my own pillow at the end of a shoot day. But I also love traveling and wouldn’t be opposed to filming in another location. Hmm…. why not Greece or Italy? Just putting that out there.
What is your favorite holiday and why?
I love New Years! It’s always a great time to reflect on the past year and set new intentions for the coming year. It’s a time of letting go of any burdens and stepping forward with a fresh outlook on life.
Thanks so much for reaching out Ruth, and for your continued support.
Heather is one of those mesmerizing artists who can easily transform into whatever any given role requires of her. She effortlessly flits from voice work to drama to comedy to anything else she is granted, and her professionalism is something to be admired and even emulated, especially by ingenues who may be attempting to find their footing in this business that is often as difficult as it is rewarding. Heather’s tenacity, sincerity, and expertise are always displayed in any capacity in which she is cast, and as she continues to pursue her passions, I know that her opportunities will only become more exhilarating and gratifying as she is gifted with such amazing roles to portray both on and off the screen. Moreover, Heather’s beauty and on-screen presence absolutely irradiate from her innermost being, and in her case, the aura of joy that surrounds Heather is something that all who know her and have the honor of working with her sense from the moment she enters the room or soundstage. And that is a quality that cannot be taught nor learned; it is innate and a treasure quite extraordinary to behold.
I do hope that everyone plans on tuning in Saturday (September 29th) to the Hallmark Channel for what is purported to be the wedding of the year (if not the decade or century!), All Of My Heart: The Wedding. Additionally, please consider following Heather at the various links listed below, and if you are a part of Twitter, be sure you join us to live tweet Saturday night with the cast for the premiere, schedule permitting. I do look forward to the day when we will see Heather in a Christmas movie (All Of My Heart could always do a Christmas sequel–hint, hint) and/or possibly a leading role of her own. But no matter her character, I know that whenever her name appears in the credits, Heather’s effervescence will permeate the production as she adds her magic to whatever part she has been privileged to play. And we fans are the beneficiaries of her multitudinous gifts!
