Leonardo da Vinci: Diagram of a proposed flying machine (1789)

When most people (including me) think of Leonardo da Vinci, his artwork might be the first thing that comes to mind. Actually, he was a true Renaissance man with talent in the arts, science, music, and engineering.  It was on this date in 1496, that da Vinci unsuccessfully tested his flying machine.

“As birds flying, so will the LORD of hosts defend Jerusalem; defending also he will deliver it; and passing over he will preserve it.”

Isaiah 31:5 KJV

The first link only described the actual machine and Leonardo’s obsession with flight, and the second link is entirely fiction.

Any PRIMARY sources on this event?

I realize the links are old and I remember doing the research but I don’t recall. I will have to do some more research. I have become better at researching in later years than I was when I first began doing these. I honestly don’t recall right now. But when I get a chance I’ll try to look it up again. If it is fictional I am sincerely sorry for that–I do try to double and triple check things but I am only human.
