Summer Fit

I am so pleased to tell you about a great new book just in time for the summer!  Read the below description, and see if it’s something you just might like for you and your kids!
Without opportunities to learn and practice essentials skills over the summer, most children fall behind academically. Research shows that summer learning loss varies, but children can lose the equivalency of 2.5 months of math and 2 months of reading skills while away from school. Children run the risk of losing more than just academic knowledge during the summer. Research also shows that children are at greater risk of actually gaining more weight during summer vacation than during the school year without daily play, activity and physical fitness.

Summer vacation is a great opportunity for parents to extend the classroom learning experience into the home. Create fun and innovative learning experiences to reinforce basic skills and build healthy living and social habits as a family. Summer vacation should be fun and carefree, but it is also important to take the time to prepare children for the upcoming school year

Now, when I was growing up, I was one of those weird kids that read all summer along and honestly retained a lot of what I had learned through the school year.  My daughter is a great student, but there is nothing better that she likes than taking the summer off.  As a result, she does forget and get out of that habit.  I was quite pleased to learn about the Summer Fit Learning Book series.  I got her one for 5/6 grade since she just completed fifth grade and is preparing to enter sixth grade.  The book is divided into the eight weeks that students typically have for summer break.  It is expected they will do a little bit each day for five days out of the week.  It gives them a fitness exercise as well as academic exercises in math, language arts, and history.  It also asks them to read twenty minutes a day.  If they complete the assignment for the day, they fill in a star.

My daughter has complained about doing this (she complains about homework during the school year, too), but it has gotten her into reading and reviewing her academic skills.  A few of the things she did not learn in school, but the exercise explains well what she needs to do.  I do plan to reward her if she completes most of the assignments.

The book is very user-friendly, and I am so grateful I got to review it!  And you have the opportunity to win your own copy by entering the rafflecopter below by 9 P.M. on August 1.  Be sure to check out all the links below if you are interested in getting one for this summer!

I think it is just great. Anything that makes reading fun is welcome in our house. I am an avid reader, but my children do no enjoy it (which makes me so sad) despite the fact that I read to them from birth on…we could use something like this!
