 Trash Bin

Many communities charge a lot of money for waste management services. If you are paying a lot of money for a company to remove trash then it may be time to start looking for ways to reduce it.  Some studies have shown that the average American creates about 1,500 pounds of waste every year. If they reduced it by half then they would save themselves about $750 a year. Fortunately, there are a number of steps that you can take to reduce waste and save on garbage collection.

Identify Biggest Sources of Waste

The best way to lower your garbage collection bill is to avoid creating waste in the first place. There are a number of different sources for garbage. You will want to identify where your garbage is coming from and make some changes to reduce the amount of trash that you produce.

Paper and food are among the biggest sources of waste for many homeowners. You may want to focus on them as your starting point. You may want to use electronic systems to do as much of your business as possible. Using your food for compost can also be a good way to reduce waste.

Most people find that they are actually purchasing far more goods than they actually need. They end up throwing out a lot of the extras, which can drive their garbage collection bills up considerably.

Find Creative Ways to Reuse Garbage

You don’t necessarily need to throw your garbage away when you are done with it. You may be able to repurpose it for something else. Here are some ideas that people have tried in the past:

  • Try wrapping gifts in fabric instead of throwing it away
  • Consider turning your trash into a work of art. Kathy Mcgowan has an entire Pinterest group dedicated to works of art made from old bottle caps
  • Reuse the packing peanuts from shipping
  • Donate things that you don’t want any more

There are many ways to reuse things rather than throwing it away. You will have to get creative, but there are many ideas that you can consider.

Find Out What Items Are Recyclable

Recycling is another great way to cut waste consumption. Many people are becoming better about throwing things in the recycle bin instead of taking it to the trash. However, they may not be recycling as much as they otherwise could, because they don’t know what is and isn’t recyclable.

You can actually recycle most products that are made of glass, thermoplastic materials, paper and most metals. You can throw your paper bags and old newspapers in the recycle bin as well.
