Announcing the 3rd Annual Banned Books Week Giveaway Hop
Hosted by BookHounds & I Am A Reader, Not A Writer
Banned Books Week is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read.
I haven’t always been this way, but I do not believe in censorship. I believe that it is a parent’s job to make sure that his/her child is reading appropriate books. And when one is an adult, one can make his/her own decision. Here’s what happens if banning books is allowed. People end up being able to ban any book they want for any reason they want. And I don’t like that.
I’m going to make my giveaway pretty simple. There are all sorts of books out there that have been on banned lists. I first read The Hunger Games when I won it during a Banned Books giveaway hop a couple of years ago. I will be giving one international reader a banned book of his/her choice that is $15 and under. Please make sure that amazon, Book Depository, and/or Fishpond ships to you. Then enter the rafflecopter below by 9 P.M. on September 28, and then hop on for the chance to win more books!
Note: Some are reporting issues with this post, and they are telling me that they cannot post. If that is a problem, here are a couple alternate ways you can try to enter.
Click here to go straight to the rafflecopter.

There are too many books I like which have been banned! However, I still haven’t read To Kill A Mockingbird, and I feel that I’m missing out a lot. So I’ll pick that if I win.

I am leaving a comment for someone who was not able to comment. June Manning said that her favorite banned book is “The Outsiders.” Actually, I read part of that book last year. It is great!

Restricting books because of the subject matter is unsuitable for the age of the reader is one thing, but banning is another. Banning books is an assault on our freedom. It starts with one or two books here and there but it can cascade into an avalanche with added suppression of other freedoms. I remember when Salman Rushdie’s “The Satanic Verses” caused an outrage among some Muslims, which resulted in the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeinia issuing a fatwā that called for Rushdie’s death and eventually resulted in the death of the book’s translator, Hitoshi Igarashi.
If you look at a list of books that have been banned in the past, you’ll scratch your head wondering what the big deal was about them at that time. For example: “To Kill a Mockingbird” by Harper Lee; “James and the Giant Peach” by Roald Dahl; “Doctor Zhivago” by Boris Pasternak; “Of Mice and Men” by John Steinbeck; “My Friend Flicka” by Mary O’Hara; “Snow Falling on Cedars” by David Guterson; “The Three Musketeers” by Alexandre Dumas; “Uncle Tom’s Cabin” by Harriet Beecher Stowe; and many of the plays by William Shakespeare. It’s amazing how many of these banned books have been made into movies. Perhaps in so doing, the “offending” bits have been expunged or that times and tastes of changed.
It will take me a while to choose the book I want because there are so many great books that have been banned. -
I really want to win 13 reasons why!!
