I had no idea that today is the 120th anniversary of the cultured pearl. That’s right, on this date in 1893, Kokichi Mikimoto created the first cultured pearl. He was the son of a noodle maker, and he did a lot of experimentation to discover an artificial way to make these beautiful, expensive jewels. He used a bamboo oyster on his farm to create these spherical pearls, and his name is now the standard when it comes these precious pearls.
Let me honest. I am not a fan of pearls. I am not even a fan of diamonds (I know, all the things that girls are supposed to love, right?). Give me a sapphire, a ruby, or I’ll even take an alexandrite (I still have expensive taste, right?).
