Lousisana Purchase

This is something that I did not know, and it answered questions I did not know I had.  Sounds strange, I know.  But on this date in 1812, the Louisiana Purchase (Territory) was renamed the Missouri Territory.  Why, you ask?  So glad you did!  You might remember the fantastic deal that President Jefferson received on the Louisiana Purchase from Napoleon of France.  You might know about explorations in the Louisiana Territory.  I live in Washington state, so we were at the tail end of the Lewis and Clark Exposition that explored this territory.  On May 30, 1812, Louisiana (not part of this territory) became a state.  There was now the potential for confusion.  Louisiana State and Louisiana Territory.  Therefore, on the same date that Congress declared war on Great Britain (War of 1812), the Louisiana Territory officially became the Missouri Territory.  In this way, there would be no confusion.

What a fun way to present history. I love history but only when it’s relayed in a non text book way. I never realized that we declared war and Louisiana were adopted the same day.

Wow. That was confusing. Never expect Congress to do anything that isn’t. Lol!
