Unstoppable DVDUNSTOPPABLE

About the film:

Inspired by the death of Cameron’s close friend who succumbed to cancer at the age of 15, Kirk Cameron takes viewers on an inspiring and hope-filled visual journey to better understand the biggest doubt-raising question in faith: “Where is God in the midst of tragedy and suffering?”

Going back to the beginning—literally—Kirk investigates the origins of good and evil and how they impact our lives and our eternities. UNSTOPPABLE will prompt audiences to consider the role that pain and suffering has in our lives, as they affirm their personal views on faith, and encourage conversation starters about God, suffering, and hope.

In theaters for only two weeknights (Sept 24th and Oct 3th, 2013), UNSTOPPABLE: A Live Event with Kirk Cameron sold a staggering 260,000 tickets and reached a theatrical gross of over $3.2 million dollars. In just two nights this independent project sent a loud message – audiences want thought-provoking and meaningful entertainment.

Kirk Cameron is best known for his memorable role as “Mike Seaver,” a cultural icon of the 80’s, with his mullet hairstyle, cool glasses, and wisecracking comebacks. More recently he enjoyed much success with the No. 1 grossing inspirational film of 2008, Fireproof, and his recent documentary, Monumental. Kirk and his wife, Chelsea, were on-screen sweethearts during their Growing Pains years and are the founders of Camp Firefly, where terminally and seriously ill children and their families are provided an all-expense paid retreat (www.CampFirefly.com). Together, Kirk and Chelsea live in California with their six children.

My thoughts:  I remember when this came out in the theaters.  Our church went to see it, but it was too late for us to see on a “school night.”  And then the reviews that respected people in our church gave it were not too great.  That made me think that maybe the movie was not too good, and possibly we didn’t miss anything.

But somewhere in the back of my mind, I knew I wanted to see it.  I never watched Kirk Cameron when I was growing up, but I was a huge fan of his sister on Full House.  When I heard about his conversion and his sister’s, I was intrigued.  And I have seen some of his other films.

My mom, my dad, my daughter (who is 10), and I watched this together as a family, and I have to say that I was completely impressed.  My mom and I had some minor theological differences (that I’m not mentioning because they were minor), but for the most part, we were impressed with the film.  There were a few times it seemed a little slow, but it most importantly answered the question it set out to answer–Why do bad things happen to good people?  This is a question that cannot be fully answered on this side of eternity, but Kirk Cameron took us back to Scripture for the answers.

My daughter was completely riveted, and I am really glad she got to see it.  She didn’t pick up her tablet once during the film (that is really saying something since she is practically glued to her kindle fire), and she asked a few pertinent questions as we went along.  I am a Bible college graduate, and I have studied the Bible practically all my life, but Kirk Cameron challenged me to look at a few things in the familiar stories of Genesis that I never had quite in the way he suggested.  I loved what was said about the rainbow–I’ll let  you watch that for yourself!  My daughter’s favorite portion concerned the Flood Movie Pitch.

I can say that this is one of those movies that I would recommend to Christian families with children age 10 and over.  And if there are no children in the household, this is worth your viewing as well.  I am glad I waited to get the DVD so I could watch it at a more convenient time for my family and me.
