Walt Disney and Mickey Mouse

Before Disney made a big splash with Mickey Mouse on the big screen, he began with a comic strip featuring the character.  On this date in 1930, Mickey Mouse made his début as a comic strip in the newspaper.  His struggling cartoon studio was under contract to Universal Studios.  He didn’t own the rights to Oswald nor Lucky Rabbit cartoons; they belonged to Universal, and he lost it all when Universal pulled the rights to Oswald over a contract dispute.  He learned his lesson, and Mickey Mouse and all characters associated with him were copyrighted and trademarked by him.  That was a good move on his part!

My daughter does, too. In fact, when she was younger, she used to call him “Mickey the Mouse.”
