Interview With Actress Cindy Busby, “Romance In the Air”

Well, aren’t we a blessed bunch of Hallmark fans? I mean, really!! COVID-19 happens, and while new content hasn’t been forthcoming as much as we would like, when a novel movie happens to appear on the schedule, it is practically guaranteed to be beyond stellar! When I discovered that Cindy Busby would not only be in a new June Hallmark movie but an August one as well, I was literally ecstatic–like bouncing-off-the-ceilings-and-walls ecstatic!! If you haven’t guessed, Cindy is one of my all-time favorite actresses (and people) in the world, and when it comes to Cindy and Hallmark, that is a combination that cannot be surpassed! At least, in my book. (Isn’t that the only one that really counts?) 🙂 Just this week, I had the supreme honor of officially speaking with Cindy for the seventh time (Yikes!), and it was as though we picked up right where we left off last time! It is my privilege to share the radiant, dazzling, and vivaciously gifted Cindy with all of my readers today!

RH: Cindy, it’s just so great to chat with you again! It’s been a while.

CB: Thank you for reaching out, Ruth. Always great to chat with you.

So how have you been?

I’m doing good. You know, despite everything, I’m feeling happy. I’m feeling healthy. And I’m making the most of what we can during this time, of course.

Right. I hear you on that. At least, it’s worked out that you’ve had two movies on Hallmark during this time.

I know, I know! It’s certainly been positive as far as work goes. Things I’ve worked on before all this happened are able to make a debut and be seen on TV, so that’s really amazing. And I have a lot more time for interviews and such to promote these movies, so yeah, I’m really excited for everyone to see this one. It’s gonna be fun. We made it in October last year, so that’s usually a bigger turnaround than Hallmark usually has.

Definitely. And you just had a movie on in June, wasn’t it?

Yes, Love In the Forecast.

And that one was really a treat. I mean, I was excited to watch it. Of course, I always love your movies. I mean, how could you not love a Cindy Busby movie? I mean, please!

{laughs} Oh, I’m so grateful for all the incredible fans that have been there since the beginning. Of course, there’s going to be the few odd people that aren’t going to be your fans, but you can’t win them all, and that’s okay with me. I’m making movies for those who like them. So I’m excited about it.

So today your movie comes out. I couldn’t believe it was already August! I was like, “Where has the time gone?”

{laughs} Crazy, I know! I hear ya!

This weekend’s movie…I’m not sure what the title is.

The title changed a few times actually. It’s called Romance In the Air. It was initially called Love In the Air, but then it was changed. It is officially called Romance In the Air. It’s amazing because I get to work with Torrance Coombs, who’s my love interest. We actually worked together on Heartland like ten years ago or so. So it was really fun to reconnect and get to work together again after what feels like a lifetime ago. We got to shoot the movie in Salt Lake City and Park City. And then we also went to Lake Tahoe, which was incredible. It’s so beautiful there. I’d never been there before. We had a blast!

That’s amazing! We’re so used to having these movies shot in Vancouver or elsewhere in Canada.

I know!

So that’s really cool. What can you tell us about your character in this movie?

I play the character Eden, who is a marketing consultant. She creates slogans for businesses, and she’s feeling a little bit stagnant in her career. Her boss notices that as well, so he sends her off on a forced vacation to reassess herself and find herself again. She decides to bring her best friend, Kate, along for the little vacation.

She goes to the cabin she used to go to every summer when she grew up. And then she surprisingly meets Riley, who is played by Torrance Coombs, who was her friend when she was growing up and she spent every summer with him. They were neighbors, and he’s kind of the one that got away. So that flame is reignited inside of her, and he helps take the layer off, you know, the peels of her life where she’s become more calloused as we see at the beginning of the movie. Then she softens up and starts to have more fun and appreciate life again.

Torrance Coombs, Cindy Busby Credit: ©2020 Crown Media United States LLC/Photographer: Courtesy Candlelight Media Group

He owns a hot air balloon company that isn’t doing very well, and so she decides to lend some of her marketing skills to him and his business and helps make the business better. That is what starts the fire within her about marketing, and she becomes passionate again. Then she has to decide whether she wants to go back to her old life or pursue this new life potentially with Riley.

But the other part of the story is that Eden has a boyfriend named Michael back home, so it becomes kind of a love triangle situation. It’s a really beautiful movie. The setting is incredible. The story is really cute and fun. It’s about new beginnings and taking chances and allowing change to happen, even though it can be scary sometimes. I’m really excited for everyone to see it. I think everyone’s really going to like it and really relate to a lot of various parts of the story.

I know I’ve been seeing the trailers on Hallmark with the hot air balloons. That already sparked my interest. There’s something about hot air balloons. I’ve never gotten to go in one, but it seems like a cool thing to do.

©2020 Crown Media United States LLC/Photographer: Courtesy Candlelight Media Group

I had never been in one either until this movie, and I remember being…when I read the script, I panicked a little bit because I’m really scared of heights. I was thinking, “How am I gonna do this?” But I decided I was gonna do this because I didn’t not want to do the movie because of just one thing. I wasn’t sure how I was gonna do this, but they assured me that we weren’t gonna go fully up in the air. With the help of some camera angles and movie magic, we would make the illusion that we would be up high. But for safety reasons, it would still be tethered to the ground about forty feet up.

Torrance Coombs, Cindy Busby Credit: ©2020 Crown Media United States LLC/Photographer: Courtesy Candlelight Media Group

But it turns out there is something magical about hot air balloons that you just glide and float easily. You don’t even notice that you’re up in the air, and all of a sudden, you look down and you’re like, “Oh my goodness! Look how high up I am!” It was really a special experience, and it’s so crazy to think that you’re just floating in the sky in a basket. The only thing keeping you from falling is this heat that’s being produced to keep you up. It’s physics at its finest in a way. My only regret is I wish we could have gone all the way up. All that fear I was feeling going into the scene…it was actually so much more fun than I could have ever imagined.

You know, talking about facing your fears and all that…that’s something I’ve been learning very much this year. There’s something about overcoming those fears. It’s like you have that fear that’s holding you back, and you just jump in and do it, and it ends up being that amazing experience. And then you think, “What was I ever afraid of?” {laughs}

Cindy Busby Credit: ©2020 Crown Media United States LLC/Photographer: Courtesy Candlelight Media Group

Yeah, exactly! We just psyche ourselves up, you know?

I know what you mean. During this period, it’s been a huge time of transformation for me. I’ve been taking a course online, and I’ve been connecting with people. A lot has changed for me in a very positive way.

That’s amazing! I’m so happy for you!

I’m actually eating healthily, and I’m drinking celery juice every morning.

Oh wow! I love that!

Cindy Busby, Torrance Coombs Credit: ©2020 Crown Media United States LLC/Photographer: Courtesy Candlelight Media Group

It has been amazing. My mom and I have taken the course together, and it has made such a difference for both of us.

I’m so happy to hear that! That’s incredible!

I was actually thinking about you, Cindy, when I was starting to make all these healthy changes. I remember when we met last year, and I commented to you how you had this wonderful glow, and you attributed it to healthy eating and lifestyle. Well, now that’s happening to me.

Good for you!!

Sashleigha Brady, Cindy busby Credit: ©2020 Crown Media United States LLC/Photographer: Courtesy Candlelight Media Group

I thought about you and I realized that this was what you and I had talked about!

Isn’t it incredible how good you can feel? You don’t even realize what you’re missing out on until you actually do it. And then you’re like, “Oh, this is how I’m supposed to feel! That’s weird! Why haven’t I been doing this the whole time?”

Oh my goodness, yes! So now I think everybody needs to look into doing all of this. Healthy foods, organic foods, cutting out the processed foods. It makes such a difference. That’s the secret to healthy living.

Yep, I agree. That’s just awesome!

Back to Romance In the Air, I know it’s gonna be great. Torrance Coombs has done some other Hallmark movies, but it’s been a while.

Yes, I think he did a royal movie a while back.

Yes, and the fans love him. So we get Cindy and Torrance in a new movie. How cool is that?

So exciting.

And going back to Love In the Forecast with Chris Russell. I loved seeing you two together. You two must have had such a blast. I’ve chatted with Chris before.

Oh my gosh, I love him! He’s such a gem! He’s so funny, and just really down to earth. And he’s obviously great to look at and a great actor. We had so much fun because we got to work together…I don’t know if you ever saw A Puppy For Christmas.

Oh yeah!

A Puppy For Christmas

He played that kind of jerk character who breaks up with me after I get a puppy. We only got to work together maybe three days on that movie. So it was really nice to reconnect after what’s been like about five years ago now and get to work together every single day. And I just adore him. I would work with him on everything.

Christopher Russell, Cindy Busby Credit: ©2020 Crown Media United States LLC/Photographer: Courtesy of Luba Popovic/Johnson Productions

I had forgotten about A Puppy For Christmas till you brought it up. That’s right. He wasn’t a nice guy in that one, but in Love In the Forecast, he got to play your love interest. Also, I know we just wrapped Christmas In July on Hallmark, but my mom had to make sure she rewatched A Godwink Christmas: Meant For Love. She missed the first reairing, but I found when it was on again so I could set it up and she could rewatch it.

That one really became a fan favorite. I’m so grateful for that movie. It was such a dream to do, and the story just pulls at your heartstrings. It seems to be one that everyone really enjoys rewatching, so I’m happy to hear that.

If I remember right, didn’t you film a movie in Australia last year?

Yeah, I did. It was shot last December. That movie doesn’t yet have an air date or a distributor. So I’m not really sure what’s gonna happen with that one. But of course, as soon as I find out, I’ll let everyone know for sure.

Okay, that’s what I thought. I seem to remember how last year you had this crazy busy schedule where you were going from one movie to the next.

Yes, last year was really busy and amazing for me. I filmed the movie Romance In the Air, which is airing tonight. Then I went home for maybe two weeks. Then I went to Australia to shoot that film. It was a whirlwind fall last year.

I remember your many posts from Australia.

Yes, it was such a magical place. It’s awesome.

Romance On the Menu

I definitely have to go one day. I have a good friend I’ve connected with down in Australia. So we now have a standing invitation with each others’ homes.

Oh, that would be amazing if you got to visit.

Well, let’s just hope that someone picks up this movie soon. It looked like such a fun movie.

It’s a beautiful movie.

Romance On the Menu

Of course, the biggest question we all have and would like to know is…I know that things are difficult right now. Some things are opening up, depending on where you live. People are starting to shoot movies and shows again. So is there anything potentially coming up for you in the future?

As far as filming goes, yeah, there’s a few here and there. I’m currently quarantined in Canada. Almost finished my two weeks. And then I’ll be working in Vancouver. But I’m not really going to talk about what it is just yet. But there’s definitely some things happening for me. I feel really grateful that things are going pretty smoothly in Vancouver as far as shooting goes. The numbers are really down so that’s been really incredible for the industry. There will definitely be things coming up, and I’ll be sure to share as soon as I can.

Cindy Busby Credit: ©2019 Crown Media United States LLC/Photographer: Alan Zenuk

Well, that’s good to know! How did you survive the quarantine and lockdown during this crisis? Were you able to keep yourself busy?

Yeah, I was able to keep myself busy. I was doing at-home workouts. To be honest, I was never much of a home workout person. I always went to classes and things like that, but now I have just learned to self-motivate at home, which was something different for me. So that’s been really great. I spent my time reading and spending time with my significant other, which is great. You know, we are both so busy with work, and we’ve been able to spend a lot of quality time together, which I’m so grateful for. Then, of course, there were home renovations to take care of. We painted some stuff in our house, and I redid some of our furniture. I was all about keeping myself busy with some knickknacks here and there and making the most of my time off. Also doing some spiritual work on myself. Kind of similar to the course you mentioned and what you’ve been doing. I was just taking the extra time on my hands and making the most of this opportunity as best as I could, despite the challenges.

Cindy Busby Credit: ©2019 Crown Media United States LLC/Photographer: Bettina Strauss

That’s good that you were able to make this time into a positive thing. I’ve heard that from a lot of people. I know there is the other side of it where you have the people who are feeling isolated, especially the older people. I’ve tried to reach out to some of those people I know online. They are isolated and trying to keep that connection with the outside world up. I know that can be really tough when you feel completely cut off from the world.

Oh my goodness, absolutely. I feel grateful that I’m in a position where I’m not completely cut off from the world. There’s two sides to everything, right? You can either look at it and be really down in the dumps or try to make the most of something that’s a little challenging. So I try to deal with life in that positive way as much as I can despite things not always being easy.

And I know that about you, Cindy. As long as I’ve known you, you have always been one I’ve noticed who will choose to look at things positively even if everything is falling down around you and everything seems to be horrible. You’re always going to make that choice to find the good things that are going on and make the most of those. And I think that’s really great.

Thanks, Ruth, that’s nice.

I believe it’s one of the reasons that the fans really appreciate you. You are positive and you don’t come on with a lot of negative energy on social media. You keep things positive, and you want everyone to come together and feel like they have a sense of community. You’re not tweeting out all the horrible things going on in the world. You’re about lifting each other up. I appreciate that, and I wish everybody would do that. You do it so consistently, and I really like that. If I see you post on social media, I don’t have to think, “Uh-oh, what if I go read her page? What am I gonna read about?” Instead, I go to your page and there’s nothing but positivity. So thank you for doing that.

I’m so glad, Ruth, and thank you. While my life is definitely not perfect by any means, but if we can spread more positive than negative, why not do it? There’s enough negative out there. I don’t need to add to it.

That’s right. I hear ya! Well, we just love seeing you in these movies, and I believe your positive outlook is something that we can see when you’re on the screen. I’ve always believed that how you’re living your life is going to show up on the screen in some form or fashion. We see your positive glow, and that makes people want to watch you. It makes a big difference.

I agree.

I’m very excited to see Romance In the Air

Romance On the Menu

Well, thanks, Ruth. I’ll definitely be live-tweeting. It will be fun because it will be airing on Hallmark in the U.S. at the same time it’s airing on the W Network in Canada. I know they often play the movies on Hallmark first, and then they go up to Canada, but they will be on at the same time tonight. So this means everybody will get to watch the premiere together, so that’s awesome.

That’s amazing! Thank you, Cindy, for stopping by and chatting today. How cool that Romance In the Air is kicking off the Summer Nights programming for Hallmark!

Ruth, it’s always great to talk with you. I am glad you’re doing so well and taking time for yourself…taking the time to take care of yourself and make yourself healthy. It’s all so wonderful. Hope everyone tunes in tonight!

When it comes to Cindy Busby, I genuinely cannot conceive of a more accomplished actress who so dynamically conveys the very essence and tenets of the Hallmark spirit, and the fact that she consistently spreads her positive spark is a bonus that endears her even more so to my heart than ever before. Because my world has been entirely transformed in such an amazing way over the past few months, I found Cindy and me connecting even more profoundly than we had in the past.

In keeping with this momentous conversion on my part, let me acknowledge something in Cindy that is seldom witnessed in the world today and is possibly even rarer in the world of film and television. All too often, people are more focused on what they are going to say next rather than the conversation at hand. And when it comes to interviews, who could blame an industry professional for doing just that? No one wants to be misquoted nor appear silly when myriads of people will be reading their words for years and maybe even decades to come. However, that is not Cindy’s mindset in any interviews she ever does. She is the very epitome of what would be called “generous listening,” because at the end of our bubbly, informative conversation, Cindy demonstrated the fact that she genuinely cared about the things that mattered to me. Everything from my daily life to the changes I’ve made in my life to our sick pet, she was as sweet and kind as anyone could possibly imagine. Furthermore, she demonstrated the fact that she listens and is more focused on the other person than on herself. That quality is one that only causes me to cherish her even more.

I sincerely hope that everyone makes it a point to tune into Romance In the Air tonight (August 1st) premiering on the Hallmark Channel in the U.S. and the W Network in Canada. Additionally, if you are desirous of supporting one of the most authentic actresses and people I know, I would invite you to visit her links below and follow her where applicable. Cindy is invariably interactive with her fans all over the world, and I’ve witnessed her devotion to her projects time and again. (This past holiday season, she had two Christmas movie premieres back-to-back on one day, and she tweeted for like four hours straight!) When considering her future endeavors, my fingers are crossed that she and one of my very dear friends, Paul Greene, may have the opportunity to star in a movie together. (How can I make this happen? Should I write the movie myself??) Regardless of where her future efforts take her, I only wish nothing but joy, good health, positivity, and laughter for Cindy and her glittering circle of family members and friends, and I breathlessly await her next movies and/or shows! I cannot think of anyone I would enjoy supporting more, and I hope that all of my readers join me in this worthy undertaking of supporting this phenomenal young woman!

I had spent most of this year feeling atheistic and closed off – the work you did here had a genuine impact on my mood and outlook. It’s so rare for warmth and positivity to seep in through all the darkness. So thank you – I will be reading more of your interviews and following Divine threads wherever I can find them.

    Hi Ruth,

I wrote you a number of months back asking information on the Hallmark organization. When you wrote back, I found that you also do these wonderful interviews with the Hallmark actors – too. The fact that so many were Canadian was a happy surprise to me, as half of my family is from the Windsor, Ontario area. When my husband died in 2018, I was devastated and felt so lost. Someone told me to forget the Newscasts – which were very depressing, and watch the Hallmark Channel. I really didn’t know too many of the actor’s, so looked them up after each film. What a surprise to find that most were Canadian. Each film is a joy to watch, and gives so many actors and actresses a chance to make a very good living. They are well picked for their roles – too. I live in Palm Desert. California, and in the morning, I look forward to your daily Devotional Thoughts and interviews. I now have many friends watching the Halllmark Channel, and life is less surrealistic – not having to think constantly about this Covid-19.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts and interviews with us…………..Jodie Miller

Jodie, I cannot thank you enough for writing to me & giving this great account! I am going to definitely be back on track with many more interviews as more things are filmed, and I really appreciate you letting me know about your affinity for Hallmark and my interviews. Blessings!
