As many Hallmark fans know, today (May 3rd) happens to be the season six premiere of Good Witch. While I have yet to watch any of the movies from the series, I have not missed an episode of the five seasons of this popular Hallmark Channel show. Last season, we fans were introduced to the character of Adam Hawkins, a new potential new love interest for Kylee Evans’ character, Stephanie. I reached out to the actor who brought this character to life last season, and in anticipation of today’s premiere, it is my honor to share my recent virtual chat with Scott Cavalheiro on my site today!
RH: How/why did you decide to pursue a career in acting? What kind of training have you had?
SC: I think I began when I realized you could bring enjoyment to others through acting. It was a difficult time for our family when I was growing up, so finding some laughs and pulling pranks were the gateway.
I’ve studied all over: Meisner, Strasberg, Second City, UCB…but I really love what I learned from a lady named Lindy Davies.
What was your first professional on-screen credit? What are your memories of the job?
My dad used to film this show called Rant. It was basically a talk show for teenagers, but they spoke about serious issues. I was helping my dad behind the scenes. A few times, when the director asked me if I wanted to, I got to sit in and be a background actor–pretending to chat and hang out at the cafe where we shot the show. I was as nervous as hell. I got asked to stop chewing my gum like I was an Italian mobster–no joke!
Your first Hallmark movie was On the Twelfth Day of Christmas. First of all, what did you know about Hallmark before this movie? What was your experience like in this movie?
To be honest, I didn’t know much about the network at the time because I never had cable! I had a lot of fun. The director was such a welcoming, positive guy, as was Brooke {Nevin}. She was so fun to work with and very supportive. She could tell I was green.
I notice three shows for which you appear to be known (and I haven’t seen any of them). Please tell us about your time on Ransom, The Indian Detective, and Schitt’s Creek. What did you appreciate about your roles and your time on those shows?
I mean, each show is a largely different experience.
Ransom was fun because I got to spend days with my best friend, who’s also a semi-pro baseball pitcher, teaching me how to throw a fastball. I gained a lot of respect for the profession from those days.
Schitt’s Creek was fun, but I actually got appendicitis when we were filming the bar scenes. I didn’t tell anyone how much pain I was in because I didn’t want to get fired. I went to the hospital the next day.
The Indian Detective was a life-changing experience: South Africa, Russell Peters, an international cast…I got to play a parody of people I grew up with. What more could you want?
I may have missed Christmas With a View, but I did see No Sleep ‘Til Christmas. What did you enjoy about both holiday movies?
Do you like the holidays? Like, love the holidays!? Imagine that kind of excitement for three weeks in a row. It’s incredibly creative and positive. No one is ever in a bad mood.
Last season, Hallmark fans got to enjoy you on the Hallmark show, Good Witch. Before booking that role, what did you know about the show?
I knew a lot about the premise and about the goal of the show. It’s about family and relationships. I knew that I needed to play that as much as possible. I couldn’t be ego-driven or try to steamroll a scene. Good Witch is not about that. It’s nothing but good feels and I like it a lot.
Please tell us about your role on Good Witch and let us know any special memories you have from the show.
You should watch season six to find out what happens to Adam. It’s actually a really great season. It’s the best I’ve read and been a part of for sure. I hope everyone enjoys it. It focuses more on the adults, so some of the drama hits on a more mature level than previous seasons might have.
I believe you appeared on Hudson & Rex as well. What was your experience like on that show?
It’s a real experience working with one dog. Try working with three! They have one hero dog (Diesel) and two stunt dogs for various tasks. It’s an adjustment, that’s for sure. Especially when the dogs are more professional than I am!
Any other upcoming works you can mention?
Just wrapped on The Wedding Planners for CityTV. Also, there’s a new series called Avocado Toast. I also did a movie called Anything For Jackson with my good friend Justin {G. Dyck}, who also directed me in Christmas With A View.
I notice you’ve done some writing and producing in the past. Any plans to do more?
You bet! Claire {his wife} and I run a production company and just wrapped associate producing Anything For Jackson. We are currently developing an hour-long work with a major studio in LA (hush-hush) and are gearing up for another feature. Stay tuned!
When not working, what do you like to do for fun?
Anything that helps me escape. I read a lot of fiction. I also meditate, watch real cheesy action movies, play with the best dog in the world (not biased😉)…but all of this, I like doing with my wife. She’s honestly more fun than I could ever dream of being.
During this time of self-quarantine/stay-at-home-orders, what could be more delightful and relaxing than sitting down and watching a Hallmark show with magic, romance, and a little light drama like Good Witch? While the show has been immensely successful due to its eminent leading couple (Catherine Bell and James Denton), the addition of the handsome, sweet, and available Adam as played by Scott is certainly something that has breathed new life into the romance life of Stephanie. That hapless girl has had too many failed relationships, and as far as I’m concerned, if Adam is her one and only, let’s keep him in the series. Of course, that means we have to keep Scott since he’s the actor who’s characterizing the role, but after chatting with this guy, I’m even more enraptured than ever to witness what “goes down” this season! Scott is simply magnificent and definitely doesn’t take himself too seriously (you should check out his Instagram photos if you would like clarification), and I couldn’t be happier to testify to his ongoing success within the business. Moreover, the fact that his wife is an integral part of his journey thrills me to no end. In fact, I can only hope that in the future, Hallmark may consider featuring both Scott and Claire on the network because you know how much we Hallmarkies adore husband-wife teams!
I hope that all U.S. homes tune in tonight (May 3rd) for the season six premiere of Good Witch and continue to watch all the way until the season concludes ten weeks from now. (Sorry, Canada, but you have to wait a couple more weeks to watch.) Additionally, I invite my readers to take a gander at all of Scott’s links below and consider following him where applicable. (He does post most of his fun stuff over on Instagram, but I noticed he does some tweeting here and there as well.) Again, I am quite grateful to Hallmark for highlighting actors like Scott who may not be as well known in the mainstream TV circles and giving them a significant role in their series and/or movies. In truth, in consideration of all I know about Scott, in my estimation, he is one deserving of any and all accolades lavished upon him as he pursues every dream within his heart and mind while building a strong repertoire of diverse, exceptional credits. I look forward to seeing even more of Scott’s movies and shows in the future (I’m going to go look up Christmas With A View on Netflix since somehow I missed that one!), and I am honored to be able to shine the spotlight on him and his burgeoning career!
