With the summer months on the horizon, many families begin to spend more time in the great outdoors. While a deck increases your options in entertaining and enjoying the cool summer nights and early morning sunrises, many don’t believe that the addition of a deck is within their price range. However, homeowners who are willing to invest time in research while following a few simple suggestions can finally make this dream of adding a deck to your home a reality.

Before this process is initiated, it is a good idea for a homeowner to check out various kinds of decking available for their potential deck. Many don’t even realize the wide varieties of material available for building this addition for their home. In fact, at first glance, some may think that wood is the only kind of material available, but upon further investigation, it seems the possibilities are rather extensive.

  • Natural Wood

This is the most popular choice, but it can also be one of the most expensive options. While it can be beautiful, depending on which type of wood is chosen, it may need regular maintenance, such as, pressure watching and regular resealing.

  • Pressure-Treated Lumber

This is one of the more popular alternatives to natural wood, and the price is much more affordable. Because this material is pressure-treated, its upkeep is simple, and it is also fairly simple to work with. Unfortunately, due to the chemicals that are infused into this lumber, it releases toxic gas into the air. Therefore, regular staining and pressure washing must be done by the homeowners in order to reduce the effects of this potential issue.

  • Composite Decking

This is another affordable, easy-maintenance material that is still durable and looks great. This product is a synthesis of recycled plastic and wood fibers. A wide variety of colors and styles are available, and maintenance is relatively low. Notwithstanding, potential pitfalls include extreme heat, mold and mildew, and slick surfaces.

  • Plastic Decking

This material does not look authentic, but it stands up really well over time. PVC is quite popular, and it makes sense because of the ease of maintenance. It can get hot and is susceptible to mold and mildew, but the surface can also fade over time.

  • Aluminum Decking

While industrial in appearance, the durability of this material is amazing. In fact, the only downside worth mentioning is the price. The upkeep is simple and attainable, and there is practically nothing that will cause major issues except the look of this decking.

After the material has been chosen, there are many other things a homeowner can do to reduce the cost of this much desirable addition. The cost of building a deck may be more affordable than you thought. Decks do not have to cost tens of thousands of dollars. In fact, most homeowners don’t even spend five thousand dollars because they have learned the secrets of saving on this desirable addition.

As you move into the planning stage, be sure that you create an attainable budget. While you may have to make alterations along the way, don’t forget to figure in everything possible–including taxes and insurance. Additionally, consider the long-term benefits, such as, the selling of your home and whether this will increase the marketability of your home one day in the future.

Finding the right contractor is essential to having a quality deck and, in the long run, saving money. Find the person who will do it right the first time, and don’t cut corners in this area. In addition to this, consider adding this deck in the off-peak months. This will make it easier to get the best contractor while keeping the cost lower.
