I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

First of all, this is a clean, Christian historical romance, and there is nothing offensive in this book at all. Also, the Christian message is there, but it is never preachy. The writing style is easy to read, and the characters are well-developed. Even though this is the fourth book in a series (something I only just realized), I never felt confused or lost.

How interesting that I would read this book during a worldwide pandemic. This book examines many issues that are very current, but on our minds now is the Coronavirus Pandemic. This book looks at another global flu pandemic we experienced–the Spanish flu. I found myself reading portions of this book and almost feeling a sense of deja-vu! We are experiencing so much of this right now, and I fnd this even more relatable as a result.

The author also raises the issue of PTSD, something that was virtually unknown and not truly understood and acknowledged back during WWI. They called it “shell shock,” but I did find it interesting to see it through the perspective of a WWI mindset.

How refreshing to read a historical perspective that involves faith. While not everyone was a Christian back then, most did have an understanding of faith and even a belief in God. I appreciated the perspective of the author. Not every story has a happy ending in this book, but it was nice to read an uplifting book filled with hope that might be the very thing needed in this country today.

About the Author

Melody Carlson has written more than 200 books (with sales around 6.5 million) for teens, women, and children. That’s a lot of books, but mostly she considers herself a “storyteller.” Her young adult novels (Diary of a Teenage Girl, True Colors etc.) appeal to teenage girls around the world. Her annual Christmas novellas become more popular each year. She’s won a number of awards (including RT’s Career Achievement Award, the Rita, and the Gold medallion) and some of her books have been optioned for film/TV. Carlson has two grown sons and makes her home in the Pacific Northwest with her husband and yellow Lab dog.

Writing about the WW1 era has definitely been a good history lesson for me. Prohibition laws in Oregon (and rum-runners breaking them) combined with a massive war that changed the world and a global epidemic is worth paying attention to. Especially since history sometimes repeats itself. The early 20th century had a lot going on—much that seems nearly forgotten. I’m glad to see the movie 1917 is doing well—and we plan to see it this week. Although I’m not a fan of gruesome war movies, this era continues to intrigue me. Even as I wrapped up my Sunset Cove series with Turning Tide I was left wondering . . . what’s next? But isn’t that the beauty of story?
