More from Shirley
Can you find love again on a couples matching site? Yes. And no. In my first book, Second Chances, I share how I found love and married second time on a matching site. Seventeen months after our marriage, my husband died. I didn’t think I’d ever love again, but after time, explored the same website only to be crushed with disappointment. My dreams were destroyed. As a result, I learned to fully surrender to God and be contented in whatever state I was in—married or single. This book continues my story and ends in joy! Find out what happens in this second book. God blesses us Beyond Second Chances. Read my story and be encouraged.
AUTHOR INTERVIEW
Q: When writing non-fiction, how do you keep the books from becoming “textbook”?
A: I don’t know about other non-fiction writers, but I write from first-person, try to think and respond as I would. For example, I wrote an article about a friend whose mother died right in front of her. I received permission to write her story and when I began, it was more like a newspaper article, just reciting what happened. When I put myself in her place, it came together much easier. It was published twice so the editors liked it too.
Q: The perception is that non-fiction is harder to write than fiction…..
A: I think Non-Fiction is easier. I remember reading years ago a successful Christian author who wrote many NF books, then went into the Fiction genre and found it much more difficult. I’ve tried fiction and don’t like what I read (my writing). There’s lots I’d like to write but want to honor the privacy of people who might recognize themselves in the story and fiction would be good, but so far haven’t been successful.
Q: When you are writing, what does your daily schedule look like?
A; I am fortunate because I am retired. I’ve found it is important to write daily—even if for fifteen minutes (that goes by very quickly, I’ve found). I usually wake up, enjoy about 30-40 minutes (with coffee of course!) of quiet time with my husband. It is a rich time of reading, talking, and praying for different needs. We then go for a walk or a trip to the gym for exercise, then I hit the computer. Sometimes it’s writing, but also marketing that I must do—and dislike a lot! We have many activities because of our blended family with lots of grandchildren, so there’s swim meets, volleyball games, track meets, plays to attend. I also play in a community orchestra so try to practice my violin too. My favorite part is in the evening, reading what I’ve written, to my dear husband who enjoys listening to me read! Then we choose a movie to watch. Last night we watched “Fifth Quarter” a tear-jerker, but it gives me empathy for those who are grieving—my biggest area of influence.
Q: Why did you decide to pursue a career as an author?
A: I didn’t really choose it. It chose me! While grieving, it was suggested to journal our thoughts. I found it to be helpful in my grieving process but also found I really enjoyed the writing process. I always aspired to be a writer, but was busy raising my family, working as a music teacher/librarian. My first goal I thought would be fun was writing children’s books. I haven’t done that yet but hope to sometime.
Q: How do you choose the topic for your books?
A: I read a lot of books and get ideas sometimes from them. From people’s stories that I hear as a facilitator in a grief group. The Bible. As I read, I ask the Holy Spirit to speak to me and prompt me to write about something. When I write my weekly blog, He always comes through with something.
