Description Reason for Concern: Mrs. B Mystery by Anita Kulina

Mrs. B is back on the case with a new mystery to solve!

People don’t vanish into thin air.  Yet no one has seen Alice since St. Mary’s Senior Center had their Supper Club outing on Sunday.  As Mrs. B learns more about her friend, the disappearance seems to involve a burglary, an emerald necklace and maybe even a motorcycle gang.

Where in heaven’s name is Alice?

Praise Question of Devotion: Mrs. B Mystery by Anita Kulina

“I found it captivating and funny how one elderly lady’s typical life changes from doing games at a senior center to investigating a crime.
The characters including Mrs. B are believable. For fans of The Murder She Wrote, Piriot, and Columbo, readers will love this book. I was engaged, entertained, and can’t wait for the next installment. Mrs. B is my new favorite lady detective. Smart, brave, and funny. Overall, I recommend A Question of Devotion to all.”-Danielle Urban of Urba

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

First of all, this is the only book I have ever read in this series, but I had no trouble following the plot or the characters. So while I’m sure it is better to read the books in order, if this happens to be the first book you have read in the series, you should not get lost.

This is a cozy mystery book, and there is no gratuitous violence nor sexual situations. However, there are a few cases of what I would consider profane language. Since I was not expecting them, they caught me by surprise. But because the instances are very few, it may not even be a problem for my readers. Ironically, Mrs. B goes to church, and there is a portion of a sermon included as well.

This book was a nice, quick read, and I never found myself bored. I don’t want to spoil anything about the mystery, so I will say is that the storyline takes several unexpected twists and turns, and while I had my suspicions, until I reached the end, I wasn’t certain about the outcome.

The strength of this book–the short, quick style in which it is written–can also be a bit of a hindrance. While the author has packed a lot into such a short mystery, I would have preferred a bit more meat to the story. I give this book a solid 4.5 rating, and I would say it whet my appetite for past and future offerings in this series.

Why I Love a Cozy Mystery

Guest post by the author

Why is it, when I walk into a bookstore, I head right toward the cozy mysteries?

They draw me like a magnet.

I peruse the shelves, searching for my favorites. I locate them all, and then comes the hard part. Do I want to spend time at the beach with Carole and Jude in Simon Brett’s coastal village of Fethering? Or am I in a pious mood, so I should head to church with Ralph McInerny’s Father Dowling? Do I want to feel like a teenager again with Kathryn Haines Miller’s Iris Anderson, or would it be more fun to imagine what it’s like to be a sweet old lady with Agatha Christie’s delightful, unflappable Miss Marple?

Which to choose, which to choose? My favorite problem to have. I read the back of one book, then another. Eventually – I have to decide eventually – I take a book to the counter, then walk out the door with a new adventure under my arm.

I love cozy mysteries. There’s a sense of predictability about them. Oh, the story will puzzle me, that’s for sure. I’ll think I know the answer. Then I’ll be proved wrong. Then I’ll think I’m on the right track this time, only to find that I couldn’t have been more off-track.

The story may not be predicable, but If I choose a cozy mystery, there are three things I know will always be true.

First, I am going to visit a town that will be very real in my mind. That town will be inhabited by people I recognize from other books in the series. I’ll come to think of these people as my friends. I may like them, I may not like them, but I’ll look forward to seeing every one of them again.

Second, I may be riding a bus in the pouring rain, or washing clothes at the laundromat, but I’ll be blissfully unaware of it. Instead, I’ll be imagining the taste of the hot chocolate Hercule Poirot sips as he ponders the problem before him, or picturing Della Street at her desk outside Perry Mason’s office and wondering what dress she has on.

Third, and most important, is this. When I close the book, I will have a feeling of satisfaction. I will know that everything is in order, everything is in its place. For that one brief moment, all will be right with the world.
