As much as I love featuring Canadian actors, I similarly adore highlighting Canadian musicians, especially when they are first starting out. Due to the promotion of the music of Jordyn Pollard by the fantastic Super Channel Heart & Home, I was informed about this amazing artist, and I am quite pleased to be able to share Jordyn and her lovely talent with my readers today!
RH: Why did you decide to pursue a career in music?
JP: I have been really invested in singing and performing from a young age. My family has home videos of me dancing in front of the TV while CMT and the Lizzie McGuire movies were on the TV. I was about two then, and I haven’t stopped putting on shows since.
What kind of training have you had to prepare you for this career? What instruments do you play?
I started taking singing lessons when I was around nine years old and continued on and off till around the age of fourteen. I’ve always wanted to expand my vocal range and styling, and these lessons really helped me become comfortable on the stage! I also took piano and guitar lessons for three years each. I still continue to play to this day.
What have you already accomplished in music and musical theater?
Throughout my professional singing career, I have received the title of SCMA Youth Performer of The Year in 2017 and won the 2018 SCMA Youth Bursary. I am so fortunate to have organizations such as the ACMA and SCMA who support up and coming artists. They’ve really helped me! I’ve also been able to perform in musicals such as Grease and Leader of the Pack, as well as share the stage with artists such as Good Bamford and Brett Kissel.
How would you describe your songwriting process? Where do you find inspiration for your songs?
My songwriting process is ALL OVER THE PLACE! I don’t really have a certain schedule for writing; inspiration comes at unexpected times and in all forms. Whether it be a melody, hook, title or a lyric. I love drawing inspiration from movies and books, but also real experiences that I’ve lived through and witnessed myself. My song “That Kinda Love” is written about the love that I witness in the movies, especially John Hughes classics.
Please tell us what music of yours is already available for purchase/download. What music is yet to come?
Right now, my debut single “Good On Me” is available and the Good On Me EP is coming out November 1st!
Any upcoming projects/concerts you can mention?
There are a lot of exciting things in the works! I’m preparing for my album release party and am also getting ready to continue my radio tour across Canada. I’m also hoping to start co-writing with some other Canadian songwriters!
You were first brought to my attention during to Super Channel Heart & Home tweeting out something about a new Christmas song/video. What can you tell us about that? (Especially for those of us not in Canada)
This is a project that I got to work on with some of my closest friends, Keltie Monaghan, Hailey Benedict and Anna Johnson. The SuperChannel asked us to write and record a song about coming home for the holidays. Christmas is my favourite time of year and it made it extra special to write about it with my music family.
The Hallmark network often features Canadian musicians on their soundtracks for movies. If you were asked by Hallmark to do something like that, what kind of song do you hope they would feature of yours?
It’s always been a dream of mine to be featured on a soundtrack! I hope that I’d be featured on a romantic comedy— because those are THE BEST feel-good movies. Hmmm.. I’d probably write an upbeat song for the opening credits or a slow ballad for when the couple goes on a date to a cozy cafe.
Since you have done musical theater, do you also have aspirations to be an actress?
I would love to somehow incorporate acting into my life. I’m very interested in theatre! My high school drama club went to a few plays and musicals every year and I loved watching the magic happen. Maybe one day I can act on the stage or even on screen!
How do you and your family celebrate the holidays?
My family gets together and has a big Christmas supper every year! I’m very fortunate to have all my family close to me. My sister and I also wear matching onesies every Christmas morning!
What charities and causes do you feel strongly about?
I feel strongly about bringing awareness to mental health as there is a very strong stigma around it. The majority of the population will face some kind of struggle with a mental illness and it should be recognized.
I love Jordyn’s attitude and the way she genuinely cares about pressing social/mental health concerns that regularly plague an extensive assortment of people in the world today. The fact that she is already such a grounded musician at her young age fills me with genuine hope that the generation coming up may have some particularly strong leaders and dynamic artists. No doubt, Jordyn herself is one of those truly extraordinary people. I hope that everyone will take a look at all of Jordyn’s links below and consider following her if so inclined. And when her album comes out, maybe many of you will even buy her EP for your own collection. Regardless, I sincerely wish all the best for Jordyn as her career progresses, and maybe Hallmark will snatch her up and feature her music in one of their future films! Fingers crossed for her and may all of her dreams come true for many years to come!
