More from Daniel
Searching for your next step in life can be exciting yet overwhelming, intriguing yet stressful, adventurous yet painful. “What’s next?” is a question everyone asks and struggles with at some point in his or her life, and many people end up asking this question multiple times. I have a friend who’s 18 and trying to figure out if he should go to college or not. I have another friend who’s 21 and can’t decide what major to choose. I work with some people who are graduating from college and are taking their first step toward a career. I just got off the phone with someone I deeply care about who’s trying to keep his dream afloat while also paying the bills. All of these men and women are asking “What’s next?” All are searching for answers.
For some of us, “What’s next?” is a question of dreams— What could the future look like if I did this or that? There’s an excitement that comes with thinking about all the possibilities and potential. For others, the question is stressful, and the answer may require a major transition, like moving away from family or changing jobs. Thinking about the future carries with it equal parts of angst and anticipation. “What’s next” always ventures into the unknown. If you’re asking “What’s next?”— join the club! You’re not alone.
What’s Next: Your Dream Job, God’s Call and A Life That Sets You Free is a book is for dreamers and practicalists (no, this is not a real word, but it should be). It’s for those who are excited about transition, and those who dread it. It’s a book about the hope and freedom that comes with asking God what He wants for your life, and then hearing His voice through the pages of Scripture as He directs your steps.
AUTHOR INTERVIEW
Q: What was your first published work, and how was it received?
A: My first book was titled Ten Days Without: Daring Adventures in Discomfort That Will Change Your World and You. The reviews were positive, but the sales? Not so much! I’m very thankful that God opened a second door for me to write another book. I’m also thankful I have a full-time job to pay the bills because writing doesn’t bring in much money!
Q: When you are writing, what does your daily schedule look like?
A: Writing books has never been a full-time gig. To complete each project, I would wake up at 5:30am, write from 6-8:30 and go to work at 9.
Q: How do you choose the topic for your books?
A: Each topic was a passion, and I was exploring those topics for my own edification. Most of the topics I get passionate about do not become books, but some hit the heartstrings of other people. Those are the ideas I try to write books about—ideas that other people care about as well.
Q: When writing non-fiction, how do you keep the books from becoming “textbook” renditions to making the stories come alive so people are interested in them?
A: People are not just brains in bottles, but have hearts and souls and families and contexts. Content needs story to be relevant and helpful. Stories have the tendency to get passed assumptions and expectations, and help someone see the world differently. And the best stories? Are simple! Each includes a series of actions with built-in tension, and the author uses a character (or steps out of the story) to tell you why you should care about the story. If there is tension, the reader will read until the tension is resolved. Even if the tension is simple (i.e. I was sitting at a normal red light…). The immediate question is, “What is the abnormal thing that happens at the normal red light?” Story plus meaning equals life-changing content that can impact a reader, and it will keep the facts from being lost in a “text-book.”
Q: What is one topic you would love to write a book about but have not been able to as of yet?
A: One day, I want to write an adventure book for my kiddos and a novel for my wife.
