Going camping with your family is the best way to spend some quality time together, get to know each other better, and create some unforgettable memories for the next year. Kids (especially babies and toddlers) usually don’t share your desire to just stretch your legs sitting on a camping chair, breathe in the forest air, and contemplate the sky. So you should plan entertainment for them if you don’t want their down moments to spoil the vacation. Although the scope of activities available differs from one campground to another – not all of them offer hot tubs, finishing, large pools, or bicycle/canoe/kayak rental – you can always bring a pack of exciting family activities with you. We’ll give you a bunch of entertainment and snack ideas, camping crafts, and fun chores for kids to help you enjoy a perfect camping experience. And maybe… you’ll even think, “Why not make my own website for kids to document this wonderful time together?”

Keep it simple and fun

Most of the time, you don’t need to invent something very complex. The ambiance of the place will give you tons of ideas on how to make this time special for kids. Watching animals and bugs, sleeping in the cabin or a tent and cooking meal over the campfire are kid’s favorites!

Give them chalk and let them go wild decorating rocks and trees!

Chalk is a proven method to entertain kids of all ages. While toddlers can just have fun coloring everything they see, older kids can leave special secret signs or mark objects with a certain color. It’s so much fun!

Let them play with water

Small kids love splashing water. Give them a 5-gallon bucket full of water (put heavy rocks inside if you think they can tip it over) and let them drop things in it, or make paper boats and enjoy a regatta! This will keep your kids busy for a long time. However, you still should be near and monitor them.

Create a dig ground for toy dump trucks

Leverage another thing all kids (boys especially) love to have some peaceful minutes. Dig a hole in the ground and invite kids to continue developing the dig site and have fun with their shovels and dump trucks.

Involve them in gathering firewood

Assigning small chores not only helps to keep kids busy but also makes them feel important and helps them get their first unique experiences. Gathering kindling, bringing something from the cabin, collecting toys, or throwing the trash away are tasks even a toddler can cope with.

Get ready for some craft time

While camping, you can collect lots of natural material. Make a herbarium or a flower wreath, craft a camp sign out of everything you can find around, make leaf prints or create stone sculptures. You can also help kids make stone pets by drawing eyes, ears, mouth and nose with a marker on rocks. Apart from making stuff from nature, you can always rely on proven things like coloring books, legos, or play-doh.

Make s’mores

Who would resist the temptation of sitting near the fire and munching a traditional camping delight? It’s just a perfect treat to celebrate the end of another camping day! Every family usually has its signature s’more recipe. You also can experiment with roasting marshmallows until you find your ideal family s’more.

Bring a small plastic or inflatable pool to keep babies entertained

Babies are the most difficult part of camping because most of the time they prefer to be held. The only thing that can compete with mommy or daddy at the camping site is a pool where crawlers can have fun (sometimes even without water inside). That’s so much fun to crawl inside and outside of it, put things inside and seek them. Add some noise-making toys and you can have peaceful half an hour while sitting nearby with a cup of your favorite drink.
