South Pointe by Dianna Wilkes
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.
First of all, this is a fairly clean book. No sex, minimal language, and no gratuitous violence. However, please note this is book 3 in the series. I would highly recommend reading the first book as in my opinion, this does not work well as a standalone book. I don’t blame the author for the fact that I felt a little lost in terms of the characters. I just believe it would have been a richer experience reading the books in order.
As far as the writing of the book and the character development, I found the book fairly complex. I have grown accustomed to reading cozy mysteries, and so I while this one essentially falls into that genre, it is an intricately woven story and mystery that requires the reader’s full attention at all times. I don’t say that disparagingly, but don’t go into this believing it a simple read. I believe that in the end, the story is worth it, but it does require more effort.
I will admit that the characters failed to hold my attention through portions of the book, but again that goes back to the establishment of a foundation and personal preference. I am intrigued to learn more about the backstories of each character that was mentioned, and if nothing else, I found myself wanting more. I didn’t find it a poorly-written book, but I did find it a bit confusing at times. I applaud the author for writing something on a much more complex level. I wonder whether a cast of characters for reference may have been a help.
I did find the mystery quite interesting, and again, I’m interested to learn more potentially in the future.
