My Review:
I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.
First of all, Amish fiction happens to be one of my favorite genres to read, and while I often adore every one of the books in this genre that I read, there are those books that truly resonate with me on a deep level. I had no idea this was the second book in a series when I began reading it. This book can easily be read as a standalone book, but after reading this masterpiece, I know I want to read every book in this series as well as every book written by this author!
While most Amish books do emphasize the things that we readers have come to cherish about the Amish way of life–baking, quilting, a sense of community–this book has included all that and more. Since this book takes place during the presidency of Franklin Roosevelt, readers do not have to be concerned about things like phones, computers, and such entering into the community. Nevertheless, the community known as Charm lives up to its name while still introducing us to a diverse cast of characters that simply jump off the page. The women are strong, sometimes stubborn, and even bitter at times. The men are hard workers, but they often show their sensitive, understanding side as well. The children do not bother with things like decorum; they prefer to think with their hearts rather than their heads. And yet, there is no doubt we are reading about an authentic Amish community that is led by a patient, soft-spoken bishop who believes in redemption as well as doing the right thing.
However, as much as I adored the beauty of the story with all its twists and turns along the way, I was more impressed with how the gospel message and Christian principles were expertly woven into the very framework of the story. Many Amish communities emphasize and extol works above anything else, but this book’s characters refute that idea both directly and indirectly. Also, the Scripture verses and prayers included were deeply rooted in the heart of true Christian faith. While I know I am not called to this life, I greatly respect those who are and know that true believers do exist amongst Amish communities worldwide.
This tale had something for everyone: romance, conflict, redemption, gossip, and even a yummy recipe at the end of the book. I have definitely discovered a new favorite author who can weave a tale that inspires and engenders hope while entertaining me in the extreme!
