Churchgoing families often debate the value of their teenagers attending youth group, but there are a wide variety of reasons for teens to take part in this church function. Whether families are looking for a Baptist youth group in Denver or a Catholic youth ministry Gaithersburg MD, attending church-sponsored activities is often good for young people.

Finding Mentors

The teenage years are one of the most important periods of development that young people experience, and it is vital that there are people outside of the home to model the family’s values. Additionally, older teens in youth groups often become mentors and role models for younger attendees, which makes the experience richer.

A Strong Community of Believers

Christian families often struggle with the fact that a largely secular world seems to have a stronger impact on their children than the church does. By participating in youth group, teenagers will benefit from being surrounded by those with similar beliefs. Similarly, those youth groups who donate their time and energy to helping others will prepare young people for a life of serving vulnerable members of society.

Spiritual Accountability

Between friends at school, work and in their extracurricular activities, it is difficult for teenagers to avoid making mistakes, and some of those mistakes can have lifelong consequences. However, regularly spending time with a youth group will teach teens that there are others who hold them accountable for their actions, which may help youngsters to avoid the pitfalls that often plague youth.

Internalizing Theology

Parents and pastors spend a great deal of their time sharing their Christian beliefs with young people, and attending youth group will reinforce those lessons. Having a safe place to discuss, debate and come to understand what adults having been teaching teens throughout their lives will help youth internalize those beliefs and put them into practice.

Youth Groups Matter

Most families with teenagers agree that sending them to youth group is a good idea. Ensuring that a youth group is accessible to every teen in the home is an important part of spiritual development.

I have sent my kids to youth group. Our church is going through a transition at the moment, and I’ve been advocating for a stronger youth group. Having strong programs helps keep families coming, and it gives a “safe” place for kids to be in their Faith.
