Well #Hearties we have finally reached the conclusion of season 2 of When Calls the Heart. It is somewhat bittersweet, but I am confident that we will work hard to see the series renewed. Especially after viewing the finale.
Let me begin by saying the writers of this show are some of the finest in the business. As we neared the end of the finale, my daughter was cringing, but I was cheering and calling out words like “brilliant” and “genius.” While it does have the promised cliffhanger, I sincerely do believe that hope is returning to Hope Valley. In fact, I was more swept away by the secondary stories than the Jack/Elizabeth dilemma. Then again, I have never doubted (nor do I still) the certainty of these two being together.
As always, please note that I attempt to publish reviews that are “spoiler-free.” Understand that if you don’t want to know anything about the finale, DO NOT READ any further.
The Lee/Rosemary story has truly become one of my favorite stories this season. I know many people find Rosemary distasteful–I doubt some have forgiven her character for pursuing Jack as she did in season one. However, I do believe the character that Pascale Hutton has molded this year is quite an intriguing character. She has moved from the spoiled Eastern girl who has everything handed to her on a silver platter to being well on her way to becoming a woman of substance. For those who wonder why on earth Lee is pictured with another woman, I would invite you to remember episode nine and Rosemary’s words to Lee. Although Pascale Hutton has warned us about Lee, just remember that things are not always what they seem. There is an ultimate and very pleasing resolution to this story, but no hints as to what it will be. I am convinced that you will relish this story (#Hearties will be very excited about Rosemary’s and Jack’s interactions).
Another popular secondary storyline this season has been that of Julie and Tom. Many are waiting for Julie to run off and marry Tom despite her parents. Well, know that Julie does figure into the cliffhanger. What happens shouldn’t really surprise anyone, but it certainly does make one wonder how a season three would solve this dilemma. As a side note, I have been thoroughly enchanted with the way in which Charlotte Hegele has played and developed the character of Julie Thatcher this season. She has truly stolen my heart. While she was good during season one, I would call her exceptional and thoroughly enthralling this season.
For those like I who are missing the children and the schoolroom, you will find these characters and setting returning during the finale. I absolutely adored the scene that is shown here. You can probably sense the tension between Jack and Elizabeth. I won’t give anything away, but this is a pivotal scene that naturally leads to the ultimate scene.
This has been one of the most heart-wrenching things all season for me. I simply cherish Abigail (I mean do I really need to say just how great Lori Loughlin is? I’ve been a fan of hers for years!). I was certain that she and Bill (Jack Wagner) would be together this season. But we all know what happened. Furthermore, we have the new pastor in town (Mark Humphrey). My mom told me tonight (she hasn’t seen the finale) that she doesn’t trust the preacher. And indeed I do believe that the series is setting up poor Abigail to be in a love triangle next season. Just know that things are never what they seem. I can’t say too much, but one of the biggest parts of the cliffhanger for me is this scene.
Just why is Jack arresting Bill? All I can say is that things are never what they seem. (Make that your #Hearties “mantra.”) I can’t tell you what happens, but once you see the episode, you will have no trouble comprehending the scene. I honestly don’t know who Abigail should choose (I’m glad I’m not the writers having to decide that for next season). Just know that neither man is exactly whom they appear to be.
Add Nora to the mix, and I was absolutely blown away! I was discussing this with one of my friends who had not seen it, and she figured out what I never would have considered. Nora is more calculating and conniving that I even imagined. Again, I an enraptured with seeing all these characters interact–the actors are absolutely phenomenal. And don’t underestimate Mr. Gowan. He is far from done wreaking havoc in Hope Valley!
Of course, his “secretary” is still present and causing turmoil (and I’m sure offering Mr. Gowan some favors on the side). Trouble is brewing, and I have no idea if they will ever quite trying. What a diabolical combo!
Well, for those dog-lovers, Rip will be in the finale in a pivotal role. In fact, he is responsible for what occurs in these featured scenes. Well, at least partially responsible. And this is the couple about wich most of the #Hearties are concerned. I’m not going to lie to you and say “and they lived happily ever after.” Please remember that this is at least semi-realistic. No one lives “happily ever after,” even on Hallmark, at least without some pain and suffering along the way. It should come as no surprise that these two are still having issues (thank God for Abigail). And for the first half of the finale, I was convinced these two needed an intervention. Additionally, Elizabeth needed to figure out what (or whom) she really wants. For most of this season, Elizabeth has been straddling the fence. She wants the comforts of Hamilton and the fulfillment of Hope Valley. Unfortunately, this is an inconceivable way to live. And in so doing, she is losing the only man she really ever loved.
The top questions on #Hearties minds are:
1. Do Jack and Elizabeth kiss?
2. Does Jack propose to Elizabeth, and does she accept?
I refuse to answer either of these questions because if I did, I would completely spoil the ending. What I can say is this. There are several swoonworthy moments between these two, and so rest assured that they are still in love. There is a proposal at the end, but I refuse to mention what characters are involved. Yes, it leads to the “massive cliffhanger,” but I wasn’t bothered by the ending. After all, I am convinced that this conclusion is exactly what is needed to ensure that #Hearties will go crazy and demand a season three. That’s what we need to do, and after watching this episode, I can honestly say I am more convinced than ever that a season three must happen. I will join my voices with you until we get a definite word.
In conclusion, this episode is probably my favorite of the season. The only episode that even comes close is the premiere. However, I think this one is even better. The acting is absolutely top notch, and the writing is stellar. I would invite everyone to tune in for an emotional rollercoaster, but I one that offers a bit of hope along the way. Don’t despair. I have faith that Season three will happen, and we just might get our happy ending next season.

Whatever happened to Julie and Tom? Are they even referred to at all after season 2?

At this point, I’m afraid the answer is no. It’s one of those loose ends that the writers wanted to tie up, but alas, it may never happen.

Unfortunately cable seasons are becoming just that–10 episodes. My understanding is that Hallmark doesn’t have the big budget like other networks. I don’t know if that’s true but at least we get something!

I love this series. Is it based off the Janette Oake book? It must be.

It is based on Janette Oke books however it uses them for inspiration. It is not the story of the books. I really like it though.

I love this story about the town of Cedar Cove. It is its second season, and I have been watching this on Hallmark since it went on.

I have heard this show is great. I have not ever seen it, but you have me intrigued. If even just for two seasons.

Thank you so much for your reviews, Ruth. I look so forward to them. I have always been a Jack and Elizabeth fan from all of the first season and, even though I know it is necessary, hate to see them have to go through such relations as they have this season. Look forward to tomorrow’s Season Finale! I am sure we will have a lot of answers that we have been looking forward to. Hopefully, we can get rid of Charles, once and for all! Any hope in that?? Again, keep up the good reviews!
By reading your reviews and seeing the pics, we have to have a Season 3!!

Well,Ruth, your review was great as it always is. I am so excited to watch tomorrow’s finale. I often think about the phenomenon of the enthusiasm of the “Hearties”. It became all encompassing.I have said before that WCTH was always my favorite series. But I like the others. I am hoping you will be reviewing “Cedar Cove”. After all we have to keep Warren in line. Brennan fascinates me. He is so versatile. Before I finish I would like to tell you how much I enjoyed seeing Martha. She is a delight. Thank you for keeping us informed.

This was fantastic as always!! You sure do know how to make us excited and feel good at the same time!! You truly are a wonderful writer and you have made us feel good about what is to come in the season’s finale!! I can hardly wait to see what is coming our way!! I have to admit I am nervous about who will propose and of course I want it to be Jack!! I do not like Charles and I am wondering why we were told that we would not dislike Charles because I really dislike him and I can’t wait for him to hit the road and leave town forevermore!! I am so intrigued by what will happen in the triangle of Abigail and the preacher and Bill and if Bill is really just taking the fall and will be redeemed in Season Three! Notice I say Season Three because I know that all of us will go down fighting for that!! I know that Hallmark will hear our Cry and hopefully will give us another brilliant season and that you again will be reviewing for us!! As always you are so appreciated for your talent and wonderful and delightful writing!! I also can hardly wait for the Story on Lee and Rosemary!! Thanks again Ruth!! God Bless you!!

Hi Ruth, just want to thank you for these reviews. Your east coast Hearties stayed up past their bed time for these! I’m sad to see the finale is upon us and boy am I trying to do my part to get it. I am hoping for some character redemption for Elizabeth in the finale. I have not enjoyed this “wishy washy” Elizabeth and like you said, as a result of all of that, she could be losing Jack. My worst nightmare is that Charles shows up. Does he? Here’s to season 3! -Lisa
