Welcome to my mini-review of  the upcoming When Calls the Heart episode Heart & Home that will air on the Hallmark Channel on Saturday May 30 8/7c.  I received early access to the episode because I am a member of Crown Media Press. Realize that although I do my utmost not to reveal anything–I loathe spoilers–there is always a potential spoiler alert in any of my reviews. Therefore, if you are concerned about spoilers, DO NOT READ ANY FURTHER!

nora

Have you been wondering about Nora, Bill Avery’s wife that showed up on Abigail’s doorstep?  Sorry, #Hearties, you’ll have to keep wondering. She makes a very brief but powerful and confounding appearance in this episode. It’s one of those things that adds to the mystery and intrigue of the series. You’ll also see Bill in this episode–some essential things happen with him that may get him out of the doghouse (but I have to admit I have my reservations). As one of my friends said, the jury is still out on Bill Avery, and after this episode, the jury may have to deliberate some more. My daughter and I watched this episode, and we have a theory about Nora. We’ll see if we’re proven right (I’ll let you know later on if we’re right or not). Amazingly, she and I had the exact same thought at the same time. I’ll look forward to discussing this part of the episode with my #Hearties friends later.

If you’re like me, you may have missed seeing Elizabeth in the schoolroom with the children. And of course, we have a school now. Although it is a fleeting scene in the schoolroom, it is sweet, emotional, and even humorous (you might catch a glimpse of Jack, just saying). I hope to see the more of the children and Elizabeth’s expert teaching in future episodes. I am weary of her running back to Hamilton every other episode!

If you recall last week’s episode (oh dear, I forgot. I’m writing a review for my #Hearties friends who have probably seen last week’s episode more times than I can even count.), you’ll remember Julie and Tom took Julie’s dad’s automobile for a spin. This week, both Elizabeth and Jack are recalled to Hamilton, and yes, it has something to do with this ill-advised trip the young couple took.  Unfortunately, Charles is there waiting for Elizabeth (sorry #Hearties, he’s still around).

This is a moment of hope to be sure, my friends.  All you have to do is look at the expressions and body language. We know Elizabeth and Jack should be together. Nothing against Charles, but he is not the best match for her.  We #Hearties are keeping the faith, and nothing can change that.

flo
Look who’s back! It is none other than our own Feisty Flo! But based on her expression, you can surmise that things are rather tense. I won’t tell you who is confronting this outspoken, headstrong woman, but you will absolutely adore the exchange! And you will find even more delectation with whom is overhearing the conversation and ultimately steps in.  I will say this is a rather spiritually charged discussion, and I am so grateful to the writers for continuing to emphasize faith-based values.

Oh this was the highlight of the entire episode for me!  And I bet all of you want to know why these three are celebrating (not saying–not at all–you have to WAIT) . Now I know that many #Hearties still can’t stand Rosemary. I still read many disparaging remarks about her. As you well know (if you’ve followed my reviews), you know I was wary of Lee in the beginning. Here’s what I will say. No matter what you think of either of the characters, I predict that by the end of this episode, at least ninety percent of #Hearties will find themselves saying that Rosemary accomplished something that has the potential to change Hope Valley for good.  And I have to say that this couple absolutely astounded me! I never saw it coming, and my daughter and I both cheered.

jack elizabeth

Here’s what I can promise each of you reading this review. You are going to absolutely delight in so much of this episode. Many loose ends are tied up, and some truly brilliant things occur. But like any couple, Jack and Elizabeth have some misunderstandings between them. In fact, you feel like you want to sit them both down in a counseling office and force them to communicate so that the air can be cleared between them.

This screenshot is one of the final scenes in this week’s episode, and if you have a soft football that won’t break your television, I strongly recommend that you have it handy. During the last few scenes of this week’s episode, you may wish to hurl that football at Elizabeth! Oh dear, I have had about enough of that indecisive woman! Will she ever make up her mind? These two definitely need an intervention, and Elizabeth needs some sense beaten into that lovely head of hers. She needs to decide who she is and where she belongs.

At the end of the day though, my friends, take heart in the fact that this is Hallmark. It is the network that promises happily-ever-afters no matter how inconceivable. There is no way on God’s green earth that the writers are going to break up the most popular couple in their history (okay, that’s a supposition on my part–I don’t know if they are the most popular couple in Hallmark’s history).  Let’s keep the faith #Hearties and know that in the end, we will get our happy ending. Let’s huddle together and support each other as we ride the passionate roller coaster of feelings and the tumultuous sea of emotions!

    Hi Ruth,
I was so excited to see your mini review in my inbox. I was reading it yesterday when I was interrupted by a telephone call. I spent too much time trying to retrieve it on Twitter but was never able to do it. You give us just enough information to whet our appetites for the new episode. No one is allowed to call me while the show is on. Hope no big emergency happens during the hour.Lol If so, the machine will take it.
Some of the #Hearties complain with the direction the storyline has taken this season but not me. I catch myself drifting off to sleep with various scenarios playing in my head. The writers have done a great job this season.
I am glad you have Martha to bounce ideas back and forth. Sounds like fun.

Thanks for your review. Can’t wait to see this episode. Jack has really matured this season. Elizabeth is still conflicted but I am anxious for her to choose the right direction and act on it.

In the Janette Oke series of books, “Canadian West” upon which this series is based, the relationship of Aunt Elizabeth and Mountie Wynn was fraught with misunderstandings. Much of the same type of obstacles which Jack and Elizabeth are going through now.

Look forward to your reviews. Just enough information – But would like your take on Mayor Henry Gowen. I see you didn’t mention him in this week’s episode…..

I didn’t because I felt it would give away some of the key elements of the plot. He figures strongly into the episode and I felt it better for you to watch it.

Thank you so much, Ruth! I have been a HUGE fan of this show since it began last year. I have to say that I am quite disappointed with what they have chosen to do to Elizabeth, our heroine, this season. While I see the purpose of growth and character flaws, she is like a different person to my friends and I. She was so passionate and strong-willed last season…”loyal and steadfast”, as Abigail once described her. Its been a tough sell for many of us. It makes me think that if this is what her family does to her…perhaps she should go back to HV and never look back, lol. I’m kidding and let’s be realistic, I don’t foresee that Hallmark or the writers will allow her to turn her back on her family. There’s something to be said for continuity about our characters that we have come to know and love, especially the female lead of the show who is a role model character for some young viewers. My friend’s daughter adores Elizabeth and she doesn’t understand her this season. I know Hearties have to have faith & hope in the show…that’s what Hope Valley is all about! I along with my friends are hoping that passionate, loyal, steadfast, strongwilled Elizabeth will emerge by season end. Perhaps their fight will bring her around. There is so much unsaid between Jack & Elizabeth that I can’t wait to see if everything is put out on the table. I just pray the season cliffhanger is not that she’s STILL undecided about where to live. That would be a nightmare! I have faith that true love prevails however…sorry, Charlie! Just my thoughts! Thank you again, Ruth. Come on season 3!!! -Lisa
