This Day in History January 4, 1968

On this date in 1968, a duck hunter in Texas accidentally shot and killed an endangered whooping crane. Actually I didn’t realize that whooping cranes were endangered until I read this story. It happened in the Aransas National Wildlife Refuge.  These whooping cranes really have struggled to reproduce, and though unfortunate, this did give scientists the opportunity to study these creatures in detail.

Genesis 1:28 ESV

And God blessed them. And God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply and fill the earth and subdue it and have dominion over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the heavens and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

I did not know either that they are endangered. Beautiful birds.

It is sad what happened, but I think it’s great that they got to study it.

Definitely agree Linda. Would not have wanted to be that hunter. I think he paid quite a fine.
