Cooking For the Holidays

celebrationAs the holiday season is in full swing and final preparations are being made, it is very clear that this is that busy time of year when the chief cook in the house (or family) has to begin preparations for the big Christmas dinner.  In fact, it is entirely possible that there will be more than one family meal for which to plan.  After all, everyone has their own holiday traditions and special needs.  And sometimes things change from year to year.

This year, our family is getting together for an afternoon Christmas dinner.  First and foremost in my mind, as I plan the meal, is what meat I will serve.  When I choose that,  it is imperative that I check to make sure I have the right equipment to accomplish the task.  Whether you choose to use some kind of special cooking technique or an electric cooker, the meat is probably the most important part of the meal (unless you’re vegetarian).

In addition to the meat, you will need to determine what vegetables, side dishes, and desserts. Some will suggest that you stick with the tried and true recipes, and I think that’s great. But I’ll be honest that I love to try new dishes at Christmastime.  This year I’m using one of the Pioneer Woman cookbooks to plan my Christmas dinner.  But then I am an adventuresome cook.

No matter what you decide to do, plan now. Don’t wait till the last-minute.  Now it the time to put some thought into it.  Whether you plan a full feast or do something very simple, procrastination is not advised when it comes to your Christmas meals.
