My rating: 3 of 5 stars

First of all, this was the first book I had read in this series. Although it is a stand-alone, I always feel a bit behind when I jump into the middle of a series, even if it is a cozy mystery like this. But that is not the author’s fault. Just a recommendation to prospective readers.

Generally, I am a fan of cozy mysteries, and the writing style of this book did not disappoint. I could have done without some of the superfluous profanity that I always think does not belong in cozy mysteries, but it was minimal. Also, there were no bedroom scenes, so that was good. The mystery was fascinating but sometimes a bit hard to follow. Again, that is more my issue than the author’s. I would give this a 3.5 rating for being an easy-to-read mystery with an intriguing concept. I did find that I was struggling to connect with some of the characters, but reading in order might have helped.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

Read an excerpt:

Blood colored paw prints trailed from the white tile bathroom onto the faux Oriental rug in the bedroom where Grace stood. The cat-feet marks immobilized Grace. She closed her eyes and prayed that she had been claimed by stress-induced insanity, that there were no dark-red blots before her eyes, but a hallucination. A nice long rest in a mental hospital didn’t sound too bad. Anything except another dead body in this inn where she worked.
