Mail-Order Groom, a debut romantic comedy novel by Cindy Flores Martinez, was inspired by the author’s own Polish ancestry and is based on her screenplay and movie project of the same title, which she shopped around Hollywood, New York, and other parts of the world.
A sweet romance about an American woman who marries a stranger from Poland after her fiancé leaves her right before the wedding.
Lisa is about to marry her first real love and have the wedding of her dreams, but her world is shattered when she finds her fiancé, Jeff, in the arms of another woman. When he calls the wedding off, Lisa is heartbroken.
In a twist of fate, she meets Krzysztof Zielinski from Poland on Mail-Order-Grooms.Com. He needs to marry an American woman so that he can stay in America, and he’s willing to pay money for it. His reason for needing to stay is what tugs at Lisa’s heart and convinces her to say “I do” to him. After all, it’s going to be strictly a business deal. She won’t even have to live with him, and marrying another man would be the perfect revenge on Jeff.
Lisa races to the altar with her stand-in groom, but she soon learns that she actually does have to live with him. Things become even more complicated when she finds herself falling for him, and he’s not planning to stay in America forever. Will Lisa’s heart break all over again or will she find love and happiness in the end?

My rating: 5 of 5 stars
First of all, it is imperative that I inform you that contemporary romances are usually not my forte when it comes to preferred genres. Therefore, when I give a contemporary romance a five-star rating, you know it’s good! Honestly, the only thing I did not like about the book was the epilogue, but that was a personal preference thing. The author ended the story as she saw fit.
But to the good points–there is no profanity nor sex! Okay, that is worth the rating on its own! All too often, contemporary romances are filled to the brim with both, and I have no choice but to “ignore” those for my rating. It is sometimes a challenge, but there was no challenge with this story. I fell in love with the characters–I want my own Krzysztof. He was so charming and funny. And Lisa reminded me of my own journey to rediscover myself. I was reminded why you don’t marry the wrong person (like I did when I was 19). This is a book that all romance lovers can enjoy. I struggled to put the book down, and I lost track of the time (hard to do with the amount of books I read).
I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.

EXCERPT
Chloe’s knees buckled. “I can’t believe you married him! How did it happen?”
Zoey’s face lit up. “Did you do it for the money?”
I began to hyperventilate. “You’ve got it all wrong. My marriage to Krzys has nothing to do with that website.”
Chloe twisted her mouth. “You liar. How much is he paying you?”
“Do you have to sleep with him?” asked Zoey.
“No.” I wrinkled my nose. “I don’t even know him.” I stopped. “I mean, of course I’m going to sleep with him. He’s my husband.”
Chloe shrieked with delight. “You admitted it! It’s him! I can’t believe this.”
I waved my hands. “No, I didn’t!”
“I have to post this online.” Chloe glanced around the room. “Where’s my phone?” She pounced toward her handbag, which was on her table.
Zoey followed her with her fingers tapping her QWERTY keyboard.
I felt light-headed. “What am I going to do, Daphne?”
“How should I know? Why did you ask them to be your bridesmaids, anyway?”
“I thought they were my friends.” I watched as Chloe gained on her handbag and as Zoey kept typing. I couldn’t let them expose me this way. I had to do something to stop them, but I didn’t know what. I bound after them. “Chloe, Zoey, wait. I’ll split the money with you.”
They both turned.
“Are you trying to bribe us?” asked Chloe.
“No. I mean, yes. I don’t know. I’m offering to share some of the money with you if you don’t say anything, that’s all.”
She narrowed her eyes. “How much money is he giving you?”
My lips parted as I prepared to tell her.
Daphne interrupted me. “One thousand dollars.”
“That’s it? You said those men pay at least ten thousand dollars.”
Daphne smirked. “Yeah, if he’s a stock broker. Krzys works at a bakery. He makes donuts for a living.”
Author Bio and Links –
My name is Cindy Flores Martinez. I was born and raised in a suburb of Los Angeles. I have an MFA in Creative Writing with an emphasis in Screenwriting. I have been a screenwriting instructor, screenplay consultant, script reader, and screenplay collaborator. My debut novel, Mail-Order Groom, which was inspired by my own Polish ancestry, started out as a screenplay and movie project.
I spent years shopping it around Hollywood, New York, and other parts of the world and had two well-known actors, one of them Academy Award nominated, interested in portraying the lead character’s parents. After not finding the success I wanted, I officially canceled my film production company in November of 2009 and embarked on the journey of turning my screenplay into a novel.
