Beyond the Shadow of the BrownstoneBeyond the Shadow of the Brownstone by Valerie Lawrence

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Abortion is one of those controversial topics that can divide families, friends, and entire governments. If you follow my reviews, you already know what my views are on this subject. I have read books on both sides of the issue, and I am tolerant enough to read stories that go opposite my own views. Honestly, I can say that this is a book that a pro-choice person may wish to avoid.

When I began reading this book, I truly didn’t know what to expect. Due to the fact that the main characters were both teachers, I was instantly intrigued. Early in the book, I unfortunately became somewhat bored. The distinct possibility of a lower review sadly entered my mind.

Thankfully, I did persevere. And the rewards were absolutely astonishing! No spoilers here, but know that this tale has an unusual take on the issue of abortion. I was so immersed in the story that I struggled to put the book down. I was emotionally connected with the characters and their issues, and I shed a few tears at the end of the story because I was touched. This book is quite close to reality, and there is only one thing I would have changed. One of the characters conceals a secret that never comes out. Perhaps this was reality, but I can hope and pray that after the epilogue, she was able to work through her psychological issues. There is no profanity, and there are no bedroom scenes. Though not overtly Christian, the faith message is there–Catholicism is the prevailing religion. I highly recommend this to those who either have an open mind about abortion or who are pro-life.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.
