This Day in History January 26, 1830

Today’s feature can be seen on the North Dakota Great Seal.  On this date in 1830, Daniel Webster said the following:  “Liberty and Union, now and forever, one and inseparable!”  This is something that I think we as Americans should remember during this divisive time in our nation’s history.  He spoke out in his speech (which included this quote) against nullification–the right of a state to defy a federal law.  I think that’s something we should remember today as well.  I hate to bring it up, but since it affects my state, I will.  Two states in this country have chosen to defy a federal law–marijuana legalization.  Unfortunately, the federal government is making it easier for these states to defy this law without changing federal law.  No matter what you believe about this issue (you can guess my view), either the federal government needs to make marijuana legal or stop allowing states to nullify this law.  Because that is what Colorado and Washington state are doing.  I welcome anyone adding respectful additions to this topic.  I know it’s a hot topic, but understand that I am pointing out the double standard  within this country.  I think that we would do well to be reminded of Daniel Webster’s words in general and specifically.  If you haven’t heard, this very issue is causing some groups in Colorado to  call for secession–something that goes back to  the Civil War.  Let’s be the United States on this and every topic!

Forgive the political rant, but I felt it needed to be said.
