Did you know that cheerleading was began by a guy? That’s right! On this date in 1898, Johnny Campbell became the first cheerleader. There was a football game at the University of Minnesota, and he stood up and chanted, “Rah, Rah, Rah! Sku-u-mar, Hoo-Rah! Hoo-Rah! Varsity! Varsity! Varsity, Minn-e-So-Tah!” The crowd followed his lead. And so began what it normally considered a female thing. Minnesota won that game, and they partially credited Campbell’s cheering for this win. There was a cheerleading fraternity, as a matter of fact. And it was not until 19o7 that women became cheerleaders.
