Abe Lincoln: Public Enemy No. 1 by Bill Walker
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Let me begin by saying this is not my typical genre, and trying to explain the book to others is a rather difficult assignment. I was mesmerized for much of the book, and that in of itself is an almost-miracle. The premise for the book is probably like nothing else you will ever encounter, and I would invite those who enjoy history, mystery, and time travel to give this one a try.
In the first half of the book, there was no virtually no profanity, but I suppose the 1930’s and gangsters called for the language to increase. There was almost no implied sex, but I was grateful there were no bedroom scenes. I enjoyed much of the story, but the last quarter of the book was a bit of a disappointment. I had no problem suspending reality for the sake of the book. After all, Lincoln was our best president, and if anyone could straighten out our country, he could. But I felt that the authors tried to rush the ending just a bit. Although the ending did get my mind going. I would definitely read a sequel to this book. And just so you know, there are allusions to voodoo within the book, but those did not bother me.
So if you are in the mood for something a little different, this may very well be the book for you. One of the thing that I appreciated about this book was the characterizations of the historical characters. I have never considered how FDR or Andrew Johnson would have reacted to such an impossible situation. And imagining Lincoln in the 20th century truly baffles the brain. But these authors have written these figures in such a way that it makes perfect sense. I found myself saying, “Of course that is how they would act!”
I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.
