Did you know that the nation of Russia has a Flag Day? The flag that they now fly over their country has been a national symbol that existed since the seventeenth century. Of course, when it was part of the Soviet Union, this flag was not seen. Back in 1991, there was much political unrest within the country. A military coup had been planned to kill the president and his gang, but it was thwarted. On this date in 1991, the Russian legislature voted to fly the Russian tri-color flag instead of the Soviet Union flag. In many ways, this was the beginning of the end of Russia’s association with the USSR. Since 1994, this has become an official holiday to remember this momentous occasion in Russia’s history. I don’t remember this occurrence, but I will never forget when the news came out that the Soviet Union had fallen and the subsequent actions–the end of the Berlin Wall.
