Keeper of Reign

Books written in blood. Most are lost, their Keepers with them. A curse that befell a people. A Kingdom with no King. Life couldn’t get more harrowing for the Elfies, a blend of Elves and Fairies. Or for sixteen-year-old Jules Blaze. Or could it?
For Jules, the heir of a Keeper, no less, suspects his family hides a forgotten secret. It was bad enough that his people, the Elfies of Reign, triggered a curse which reduced the entire inhabitants to a mere inch centuries ago. All because of one Keeper who failed his purpose. Even the King’s Ancient Books, did not help ward off that anathema.
Now, Gehzurolle, the evil lord, and his armies of Scorpents, seem bent on destroying Jules and his family. Why? Gehzurolle’s agents hunt for Jules as he journeys into enemy land to find the truth. Truth that could save him and his family, and possibly even reverse the age-long curse. Provided Jules doesn’t get himself killed first.

EXCERPT

MIRANDA PULLED HER arm free from Saul’s grip. “Why do you enjoy humiliating me?”

“Why do you insist on leaving the house without my permission?” Saul paced his breathing and placed a hand to his chest.

“I’m not a piece of furniture you can set in the corner and expect to stay put.”

“I will not let history repeat itself. You know our situation. We must take extra precautions.” “You must take extra precaution. Me? I have a nor-mal life.”

“There’s nothing normal about what you’re doing, Miranda.” Saul’s eyes locked with his granddaughter’s. Blue like the seamless sky. How similar her eyes were to Chrystle’s. It was as if his daughter had returned, been brought back to life, after all these years.

“What—what are you talking about?” Miranda stumbled over her words.

But Saul just turned and walked away, his head bowed low, shoulders drooped.

“Grandpa! Wait.” Miranda kept pace with Saul’s brisk steps. “You think Mrs. Blaze is at the Laceworks’?” She wrung her hands and looked at the branches.

“If she wasn’t captured.”

“We have to get there quickly.”

“Why so nervous?”

When Saul looked up he reached

  1. How to Meet Deadlines and Remain Sane (Author Guest Post)
I never let deadlines rule over me because I am one of those people who get absolutely paralyzed if I did that. So what I do is I look at what’s needed to be done, and I put it into a schedule. And if something could have been done yesterday when it’s due tomorrow, that’s exactly what I do. I work way in advance and do it way before something is due. I even trick myself. One time I started packing my suitcase a month before the actual trip so I  wasn’t scrambling the day before the vacation. Actually I still had to do things last minute, but I have learnt that things always take longer than  anticipated. (This is sort of the opposite of my husband who likes to leave what could be done yesterday for tomorrow. He likes to leave it to the absolute last minute–you can see where there’s room for much rife between us here, right? but we’ve been married over two decades so it can’t be that bad!)

So, rule no. 1. Check what needs to be done a week at a time and punch in everything you must finish into your google calendar and put all sorts of reminders. These reminders that “ding” me on my smart phone and ipad, at intervals of half hour, to 5 minutes, two days before anything is needed, can be a pain, but I figure it’s more of a pain if I have heart palpitations due to stress if I consistently miss deadlines set for me.

2. I am a relaxed person actually–even though my husband disagrees. So, when I find out that the deadline has arrived and I cannot meet it, what do I do? Easy. I call who ever it is I owe this piece of work and confess that I’ve blundered. Massive apologies, and please forgive me, I’d say. Facing the music is better than going around the bush, or making excuses, I have found. What’s the worse that could happen, right? Like I always remind my kids, if no one died from it, it’ll be okay. Where there’s life there’s hope–so relax! Breathe deeply, confess, and if all else fails, find a good book and read. It’s amazing how a good book can transport you into other people’s world and their problems and suddenly my “tragedies’ don’t seem so big after all.

It’s sort of like the Elfie people. Sure they were cursed and are only an inch tall, but hey, they survived all the  many centuries, and when the time is right, they will overcome their troubles (in the form of Jules Blaze) and one day, soon hopefully, they can reverse the curse and regain their former size. Which brings me to the third point:

3. You are bigger than your deadline and whatever problem that deadline can issue out. And even if the deadline is crucial, it’s all a matter of perspective. No matter how big your problem seems, and how small you feel you are in comparison, you can still overcome your BIG problems.

If you remember these important points, you can breathe easier and remain sane. It has worked for this mother to five homeschooling kids, so it must hold some truth. And last I checked I’m still sane!
