Bidding Wars by Lacey Wolfe
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
First of all, this is a typical romance. That can be good or bad, and in this case I find it somewhat mediocre. Don’t get me wrong–I have no real problem with this book. It is short, and it features a hot guy and a cute chick. They find a second love with each other, and of course, you know how the story must end almost before the story begins. I could have done without the profanity and sex scenes (but they are not overly erotic). Some of the love scenes were hot, heavy, and quite tasteful. It drips with romance, and true romance lovers will find everything they want on the pages of this story.
I do have a couple of issues with the story. My first point of convention is the hackneyed story. I relish a love story with a happy ending just like so many people do. However, I do prefer a tale with a bit of suspense, humor, and a few twists and turns. I believe the author tried to provide some unexpected happenings, but I was not surprised. In fact, all loose ends were tied up. The premise for the story is rather engaging, but I was not on the edge of my seat ever. I found myself rolling my eyes at certain points because I knew what was going to happen.
My other complaint concerned the values proposed by the characters. I am so glad that Molly made the decision to save herself for her first husband even though he deserted her. I can identify with that scenario, and it maybe Luke did that with his first wife, too. Who knows? I fully understand and accept the fact that Molly and Luke fall in love, and since this is a romance, it makes perfect sense that they have sex. I don’t condone it, but I certainly wouldn’t mark a book down for that. My problem is that their relationship appears to be based totally on the superficial nature of the chemistry and physical intimacy between them. I believe that a marriage has to be based on so much more than the physical, and I don’t see anything else for these two to build upon. I see no real communication between them (except concerning the house), and yet they are planning to be married? In the real world, their marriage wouldn’t last more than a few years, if that. All it would take would be a hot, younger woman coming along and snatching Luke away. It may be assumed that there is a genuine relationship between the two, but I would have loved to have seen that!
Permit me to say that I was able to connect on many levels with Molly and Luke. I believe that the reader knows those two better than they know each other. If you are in the mood for a “no-brainer” romance that is a quick read, give this one a shot. It may be your cup of tea.
I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.
