I was not aware of today’s feature–maybe you were. On this date in 1898, Joshua Slocum became the first person to circumnavigate the globe alone. He was a native of Nova Scotia, and he began his journey on April 24, 1895, from Boston, It was a 46,000, three-year journey. He was 54 when he began this journey–wow! He published a best-selling account of his journey in 1900, and it is still in print to this day. Unfortunately, he took off from Boston again in November of 1909, and he was never heard from again. It is assumed that he was lost at sea.

That is too bad that he disappeared. I guess at least it is assumed he was doing something he loved.

Wow, a 3 year journey to circumnavigate the world. How long does it take now via airplane, less than 2 days? How far we’ve come in 100 years!
