A Passion she could not deny—A lie she could never escape—

From the depths of a London slum, Amanda Granger created an illusion of wealth and breeding that became her passport into New York society. With her dazzling beauty and the ease with which she lived her lie, Amanda captivated an adoring public and drove men to bold and dangerous passions.

But for all her fierce ambition, all her daring dreams, Amanda Granger knew that her heart’s desires were held together by the fragile threads of deception and secrets. Triumph would always be elusive until she escaped from her web of deceit.

AMANDA’S JOURNEY

On this book tour, most of my posts and information have been about the fact that Amanda Granger came from the London slums and rose in New York society by telling a lie. In 1890 New York, though there were no “classes” as there were in England, there were still levels of society.  Money bought a person a measure of a position. Political power was another. Fame still another.

Women in 1890, bettered themselves as women had for thousands of years. Through marriage. Amanda was no different. She married David Simon, an ambitious painter who saw Amanda as his meal ticket and his stairway to fame and immortality.

Amanda’s real journey starts after she falls in love with Matthew Wade, a married man, while she’s pregnant with David’s baby.  When she meets Matthew, it’s as if she’s know him in another life. Matthew’s marriage was arranged. It was not a love match on either side. He married Sydney to please his father and hers.

Amanda’s work as a model brings her into contact with magazine publishers and editors. She is fascinated with writing. And when she wants to write about the New York that she sees, the underside of high society where women are employed like chattel, she is appalled.

When the editor of the magazine she’s been selling her portraits to, will not print her articles, she knows she must start her own magazine. She divorces David when she realizes he’s having an affair with his new model.

Amanda’s magazine expounds women’s issues of that day, which are shockingly the same issues women face today. Birth control.  Women in politics. Poor working conditions. Maternity leaves.

When I researched the stories about women’s rights back in 1890, I was shocked to see they were nearly the same as what I read in my magazines today.

Amanda was a legend maker in her own right. Ahead of her time. Fighting for equality and hoping to secure lasting love for herself.
