The IDENTICAL tells the compelling story of twin brothers unknowingly separated at birth during the Great Depression. DREXEL HEMSLEY becomes an iconic 50’s rock ’n’ roll star, while RYAN WADE (Blake Rayne) struggles to balance his love for music and pleasing his father. The Reverend Wade (Ray Liotta) and his wife (Ashley Judd) are sure their adopted son has been gifted and called by God to be a preacher. But Ryan challenges his parent’s vision for his life, and unflinchingly chooses to launch his own music career with his best friend (Seth Green). Encouraged by his wife (Erin Cottrell) and employer (Joe Pantoliano), Ryan embarks on an unpredictable, provocative path – performing the legendary music of Drecel Hemsley in sold out venues all across the country. As the brothers destinies tragically collide, Ryan discovers that Drexel is his identical twin which leads him to question everything he’s ever believed about God, family, and his own identity.

So, I got to review both the soundtrack and the movie. This is the first time I have ever gotten to review a movie beforehand from the convenience of my home, and I am excited to share with you my review. This movie opens on September 5 (Friday), and so you can go see it on that date or later.
When I began watching the film, I wasn’t sure what I would think of it. My mom had seen a movie trailer for it quite some time ago, and she didn’t figure it would be her kind of film. I went into this with an open mind, but I have to admit I had my doubts. At least it was a Christian film, so that kept me going.
From the opening strains of the film, I was enraptured. Only about 10-15 minutes into the film, I was in tears (which doesn’t normally happen), and it suddenly dawned on me where the inspiration of this movie came from. I have studied Elvis Presley, and I know he had a twin brother who died at birth. Elvis always felt guilty and like part of himself was missing. Imagine if Elvis’ brother did not die. What if they were separated at birth? I realize that this is not a movie expressly about Elvis, but come on, we know where they got the inspiration.
As the movie went on, I was intrigued. What would the conclusion be? I thought I had it figured out, but the movie kept twisting and turning in unexpected ways. The Christian message was there, but it never came off as being “preachy.” There is nothing inappropriate in the movie, and it deals with real issues such as alcohol, segregation, and money. One of my favorite scenes was when Ryan sat in a bar and almost made a wrong decision. I won’t spoil that scene for you.
The music in this film is phenomenal. I’m not a massive Elvis fan, but his music is pretty hard to beat. Blake Ryan (I looked him up and now follow him on twitter) is truly an unknown, and he definitely held his own. He is an Elvis impersonator, and I think his voice may even be better than the original (sorry, Elvis). I am pleased to have the soundtrack since all the music is catchy and fun.
