With millions of books on the shelves today it may be difficult to choose which one to read. To narrow down the search, many people pick a particular genre or topic they are interested in reading. One genre that is popular, especially among girls, is coming of age stories. This genre focuses on the protagonist who goes through a period of growth from youth to adulthood. Themes in these books often include maturation, loss of innocence, or worldliness. The following are some of the best coming of age books for females.

The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd

This story takes place during the Civil Rights movement in 1964. The main character, Lily Owens, lives on a peach farm in South Carolina with her father whom she can’t stand. Lily is mostly raised by her African American housekeeper, Rosaleen, because her mother died when Lily was just a little girl. One day, three racists attack Rosaleen and she is tossed in jail. Lily comes to her rescue and together they travel to Tiburon where they live with three African-American sisters who keep bees.

Throughout their journey, Lily learns a lot about her mother and how love can heal. She gains a family who loves her and helps her to become who she is as a woman.

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith

A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is mostly told through 12-year-old Francie Nolan. It takes place in the early 20th century and follows Nolan’s family for three generations. Francie wants to be a writer when she grows up and struggles to gain a proper education in order to get herself out of poverty.
