Unexpected GiftsUnexpected Gifts by S.R. Mallery

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

From the outset, let me say that I do have mixed feelings about this book. On the plus side, I absolutely adore the history included in this book. Readers will be thrilled to discover many different eras of American history from Woodstock to the Great Depression (that was my favorite section). It is clear that the author has done an amazing job of researching for this particular book, and it does not appear to be biased.

Notwithstanding these facts, I found myself quite confused at different times throughout the story. I struggled to keep the characters and sometimes various historical periods and their connections straight. I wasn’t always certain when the main character was reading from her mom’s diaries and when real life was happening. I appreciated the different points of view, but I believe the author could have organized the information just a bit better. I did find the ending a bit rushed and unresolved, but that is just how I viewed it.

On a side note, there is a plethora of profanity included in the book. I understand why it is included, but I could have done without it. I was pleased that the author omitted any bedroom details, but there are sexual encounters within the book. I am not marking down the book for these details, however. I would give this book a 3.5 star rating, but remember that is just my opinion.

I was sent a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. I was not financially compensated, and all opinions are 100 percent mine.
