Vietnam

I know that the Vietnam War was a difficult period in U.S. history, but today’s feature concerns a very important quote from that area of the world.  On this date in 1945, Ho Chi Minh said, “The entire Vietnamese people are determined to sacrifice their lives and property in order to safeguard their independence and liberty.”  He was the president of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, and this was part of a speech in which this man declared that Vietnam was now a democratic republic.  Within a year or so, Vietnam was divided into North and South Vietnam.  Unfortunately, war was a way of life for this country, and it was not until the Vietnam War that this country became reunited again.  To this day, they are no longer a democratic republic.  Instead, they are one of four remaining socialist/Communist countries (along with China, Cuba, and Laos).
